I'm sure it helps that Alvarez feels he has a good coach in his hands

Well the end to Bielema's stay at Wisconsin was very awkward for both him and Alvarez so you can see why it took so long to repair the damage.

Alvarez was stunned because Bert was leaving not only after winning the Big 10 and landing a spot in the Rose Bowl, but also after being at Wisconsin so long and being so close personally to Alvarez.

Bert, as he has said in the past, had to feel a certain sense of betrayal on his part as well. After all he'd done very well in Wisconsin, with multiple Big 10 titles and Rose Bowl appearances, and Alvarez still refused to loosen the purse strings enough to let Bert keep half his coaching staff from bolting at the end of every season.

I put most of the blame on Alvarez to be honest. It was a classic case of being penny wise and pound foolish. When you look at some of the coaches that they let leave for other jobs Wisconsin could have had a scary good coaching staff.

Truth be told Bert is a better fit for the Wisconsin job then the Arkansas job. His laid back style of coaching works in the Big 10 where you have a handful of big games on the schedule. Not so well in the SEC where almost every conference game is a big game.
