Could you imagine what the U of A would look like if Yocum and Humphries and a hand full of other buildings were built in an architectural style similar to Gregson and Founders?
It would look something like this, except obviously more spread out:
Imagine seeing something like that when you come over the hill right before exit 60 on I-49 northbound. Also, for those who don't know, you can see all of campus from the Don Tyson Pkwy overpass over I-49. Would be a magnificent sight as well.
Instead we got Marlon Blackwell's granddad bringing architecture straight from North Korea to build Yocum and Humphries and several other buildings.
A god damned shame.

We need to focus on tearing down Buchanan-Droke.
It's going to be interesting seeing what type of resident halls they build next to the Bud.

Thank you!
I love that campus and spent the best years of my life there, and the scenery is beautiful, but I've always hated the fact that the architecture of the buildings is so inconsistent and a mishmash of styles. Why the frick can't/didn't we copy the style and brick color of Old Main?
Buch-Droke, G-Rip, Yocum and Humphries are eye sores as far as dorms go, and Kimpel is ugly as frick, especially right by the BA complex.

There's plans to get rid of all of them.
Growing the way we are makes that easier said than done.
They won't be here for 5 more years.

The stuff next to Bud Walton will be modernist. The only saving grace of most of it is that they are really putting a lot of thought into the landscape architecture of that part of campus. The improvements they have planned for Pomfret will tie into that, and create some really cool outdoor spaces.
There is a slight shift toward traditional architecture on campus now. We would need enrollment growth to really level off if we are ever going to see improvements to the overall cohesion of the built environment.
Kimpel was planned for demolition a decade ago, but the rapidly rising enrollment meant they could never get rid of a building that large, so they elected to renovate in stages instead.
If any of the big modernist dorms are demo'd in the near future, it will be Reid Hall. It hasn't been renovated, while the others have. Futurall also might get the wrecking ball, if I was guessing, but only after Buchannan Droke and Gladson Ripley.
There are plans for two new limestone gothic buildings in the campus core, which will be great. They just aren't funded yet.

At least one of Yocum/Humphreys will be here long-term. We might get rid of one of them.
Kimpel is being heavily renovated right now, so its here for another 20 years minimum. It will be a better-looking building this time next year, particularly the section right next to Dickson Street with the "overlook".

I've always loved how you can see Old Main from I-49 in Johnson, and from La Huerta in South Springdale, as well as from about 15 miles away in the mountains on I-49 (if you know what mile marker to look towards).
The campus setting is phenomenal. The post-50s architecture is terrible, regardless of setting.
Modernism is just cheap ugliness in most instances. The fact that the Fine Arts Center is the crown-jewel of "modernism" on our campus (according to architecture people) should be enough to embarrass those who profess to love that style. It's a terrible-looking building. They're going to renovate it, but it will still be a terrible building.

Wow, that's actually a perfect description for Humphrey's and Yocum

They've been saying the same thing about Reid for over a decade now.

This is the type of thing that drives me crazy.
Why not just pick an architectural style and stick with it? We have something architecturally that not every university has - an iconic building, one that is literally our brand. This back and forth is just idiocy.
Our campus is less a college campus and more a neighborhood where all of the houses look completely different. There's a ranch over here, a Victorian over there, a modernist over there. It's ridiculous.
