HOOVER, Alabama - Arkansas quarterback Rafe Peavey had back surgery Wednesday and will miss about four weeks, a source told the Arkansas News Bureau.

Peavey, a sophomore, would, under that timetable, be ready for the beginning of the Arkansas season, which starts September 3 against Louisiana Tech at Donald W. Reynolds Stadium in Fayetteville. He would also miss more than half of fall camp in his first season as the primary back-up.

Peavey is the No. 2 quarterback on the Arkansas depth chart, behind starter Austin Allen. The third, fourth and fifth-string quarterbacks are redshirt freshmen Ty Storey and Ricky Town and freshman Cole Kelley, in that order. At least, that was the order out of spring practice, though Kelley had yet to arrive to campus.

Coach Bret Bielema never released an actual spring depth chart, but he did name Allen the starter about halfway through spring camp and gave all four of his quarterbacks at the time spots in the chart. None except Allen have played in a college football game. Allen has 19 career passing attempts.

Peavey, 6-foot-1 and 203 pounds from Bolivar, Missouri, was a three-star high school recruit in the class of 2014, according to 247Sports.com’s composite rankings. Storey and Town were four-star recruits in the class of 2015.

Peavey’s surgery was relatively minor, the source said, but because of where its located - the back - the team would be cautious in rushing Peavey back too quickly.

Damn, not liking our backup plan. Enos says the others need a lot of improvement. Guess their reps will now increase.

Is Ricky Town not that good or slow to pick up the playbook or neither or both?

My question too. When we landed him, he was supposed to be "The Man"

5 Ty Storey (6-2, 216, Fr.)
There were a couple of days that he was outstanding, then a few others where he looked like a freshman. He and Ricky both just turned the ball over too much. I think there were times they just tried to do too much. When you get limited reps and you get in there, you might try to do too much.

9 Ricky Town (6-3, 212, Fr.)
Just like Ty, there are times when it’s not there, you have to check it down. Don’t force it. Or, sometimes you just have to throw it away. That’s what Ricky has to learn. It’s that way for young quarterbacks. I’ll say this about Ricky and it goes for all of our quarterbacks. They are tough work hard and are smart. They just need a big summer to take that last step. Ricky is like all four, a good person and I enjoy working with all four.

That's actually pretty encouraging to me that they didn't rake him over the coals regarding the playbook like they did in spring. Hopefully that means he's progressing in that area.

quote:

“We put him in there during bowl prep and he literally did not know any Hoganese (what Bielema calls his team’s vernacular). He was deficient in Hoganese so he couldn’t really call plays. (Offensive coordinator Dan Enos) is getting on him and he’s like ‘uhhhh,’ like we’re speaking French to him. That’s going to be a really big part of what we do this spring is bring along Ricky.”

Rafe had minimally invasive back surgery and walked out of recovery and is expected to be full speed in 2-4 weeks.

Maybe it's just me but I don't see there being anything minimal about back surgery.
