Also this stood out to me;
We got top billing in his list of former employer schools.

Standout Fort Lewis linebacker Ryan Ross says he was "a knucklehead" when he attended Doherty High School.
But he has grown into a leader, thanks in large part to the example and guidance of well-known coach John L. Smith.
"He's why I went there," he said. "He knows so much about football. He has taught me so much about how to be a leader. He demands it."
Also this stood out to me;

Smith, who has coached at Arkansas, Louisville and Michigan State among others, is well known for his colorful phrases to motivate his players.

I've got about six one-liners I can't choose from.

I mean obviously he isn't good enough to be a P5 coach but he's very overqualified to be the HC at Fort Lewis College. If I was that kid I'd be happy too.

Low expectations and low pressure probably means JL will do just fine there. The guy just couldn't handle big time college sports. Its a nice way for JLS to finish off his coaching career before retirement.

He's actually 4-7 and 3-8 in his two years at Fort Lewis. I don't know what their expectations are, but that's not exactly doing "just fine". I think he may possibly be incapable of keeping up with the game of football like he could in the late 80's through the mid 90's.

They were 1-8 and 0-9 the 2 years prior to that.

They probably weren't looking for the next sure fire thing though. JLS is what he is, a damaged goods coach who has some vague credentials. You don't hire him to win a national championship at any level, but by now he's a safe bet to be a lovable turnip. Sometimes what you need is a lovable turnip.

Meh, he did a good job turning Louisville into more than also ran in football, set Petrino up with a very good team, set Louisville up to be attractive enough to move from CUSA into the big east and eventually the ACC (Basketball isn't enough or Memphis would be sought after by P5s)
Michigan State did something to him psychologically, he hasn't been the same caliber HC since then, he's always had his quirks, but something happened.
May have been as simple as his financial dealings, stress and loss effect people in funny ways. Of course he had that and his brother dieing while he was here all the while knowing it was a temp job from the start. I really don't understand why he left the Weber St job to come here for that, probably the players would be my guess.
