Worst playcall of the night

After the horrible bounce on the Buckeye punt gave us the ball at their 21 trailing by 6, we had our worst call in a night full of questionable calls IMO. 1st and 10 and we have Sims roll out, leaving Howard down field as his only option. Even in the best of circumstances, Sims would have had to throw twenty yards down field on the run. Why did we feel the need to get it all in one play when we had only 21 yards to go? That stands out to me more than anything. What do you think was the worst call?

I thought we went away from running the ball and it cost us a little. With that being said, I think it was a piss poor throw. He has to put that ball out in front of OJ away from Bell. Or at least put some air under it. He threw it flat and didn't lead him at all.

We seemed to have some success running Henry around the left end, and I would have liked to have seen more of that. I'm not going to dwell too much on it though...sometimes what we think are bad play calls we would have been calling great calls if the players executed.

You can say it was a bad play call, but Howard was wide open for about a second and a half. Sims stalled, and it was picked.

without a doubt it was that stupid call!!!

Any defensive set called by Kirby on third down. I'm pretty sure Blake had another read that was "safer" on both ints, but Kirby shite the bed in this game.

Kiffin was in full beast mode on the drive that ended with the fake toss roll out Amari touchdown. After that, it was all a bit questionable.

I've said this before and I took heat for it, and I'll take heat for saying it now, but lane is not a good play caller. He can design plays well but he can't get a good sequence and establish a rhythm. Sometimes he takes us out of rhythm with his play calling, and every game he gets pass happy and seems to hate to just run the ball even when it's working.

I think that's fair. Lane is a great OC but I think he can get way too cute at times. Our 2nd and 3rd Down playcalling in short yardage situation was awful. Should have focused on moving the chains instead of trying to hit big plays. Kiffin started off the game pretty well and I was feeling good about things with the way Henry was running. Then we just went completely away from that.
We did the same thing tonight that we did under Nuss...which is get away from taking what the defense gives you.

I think the times where we called our defense back to the field after we scored. We should've just onside kicked after every score.

They kicked our arse. Im pissed about it

My big gripe is why was sims having to rush to get the play off? They should have had a play before even walking onto the frickin field but yet he rushes it and throws a pick on a drive that could have resulted in a TD but we go for a home run from the 20 down 6 with 8 minutes after rushing the play in. Pathetic.
Smarts defensive play calling sucks arse hole. Blitz the safety with no pass rush = bend us over and fist away. No sign of Tim Williams or Rashaan Evans. Same old burnt on bombs and big plays. Just sad

quote:There's a lot of truth in this, but with the way the field was stacked on those two piss-away drives I was mentally screaming that they needed to finally run left in the fourth and go 2012 SECCG on their asses. Even posted it at the time. There are a lot of times it's easy to excuse the coordinator, but Kiffin seems to run away from the smart play out of his fear of "predictability" waaaaaay too often. It's like he played too much Madden with his dad growing up or something. Or maybe he's a secret Dave Rader fan.

The 2 minute offense at the end of the game was pathetic. They wasted a lot of time before snapping the ball. Could have easily had 3 more plays with proper clock management.

Howard was open in the endzone and beat his defender. All Sims had to do was actually throw the ball up over the defender and we get a TD. Short throw and he threw the ball right into the defender.
To me the worst play or I should say series was the last with poor clock management. Even the announcer said it we should of had a second play already called for that reason of time running down. So either Kiffin and Saban did not realize the need or Sims having to look to the sidelines each play for a call cost us the opportunity to possibly tie the game.
Also the next to last play of the game we throw the ball to White which almost got picked off by 2 defenders who had a better shot at it than White but it appeared that Cooper was in single coverage in the middle of the field.

Yep. Cooper wasn't even involved in the final hail mary, which is just ridiculous.
I got sick of seeing that stupid play-action bootleg lob it to the TE play. Seems we ran that play half a dozen times without much success.
Lot of weird play calls on offense all night, but that's been the story all season in close games. Kiffin is really good when things are clicking and the pedal is to the metal. He's mediocre when things aren't working in a close game.

i dont fault the playcall on that play. i fault sims or not seeing a defender right in front of his intended target, for the second time in the game. and then throwing the ball directly to said defender, for the second time in the game.

The 2 last night and at least 2 in the Iron Bowl are just throws you can't make.

Lack of crisp execution makes EVERY play call look questionable.
The most ridiculous play call of the night goes to Urban Meyer trying to run the score up with the bomb at the end.
Back to Bama: Sims just wasn't quite as good as he needed to be, made some bad decision passes, but had good passes dropped. Plus, our Oline didn't seal the pocket as well it needed.
And yes, our third down defense play calling is the worst in major college football. If I were an opposing OC, I'd take two knees on first and second down, and on third and long make an easy first down by either running the QB up the middle or passing to the wide open receivers for 25 yards.
