Where are the stupid mistakes coming from?

Well, we know they are coming from the players but what has changed that has caused this propensity to be so careless? During Saban's first 5 years, we were so disciplined and so steady. Rarely did we put the ball on the ground or throw INTs. Now we can't seem to get out of our own way. There has been a noticeable increase in boneheaded decisions over the last three years. We're we just lucky those years?
The thing is, these mistakes are absolutely backbreaking

Fumbles happen. The interceptions...we're used to having a better decision maker under center. Simple as that.

We never fumbled like this in 2008-2012. If we did, they were never as costly. Remember Ingram and Trent rarely put the ball on the ground. It pales in comparison to TJ and Drake. Our OL went nearly 2 seasons without a holding call.
We just seemed to be a lot more undisciplined.

I recall Mark Ingram coughing one up in a pretty important game in 2010. I recall yeldon coughing one up in 2012.
Fumbles can be limited but they're going to happen. The interceptions kill me, because they aren't the product of the quarterback just getting tricked, our quarterbacks are forcing the ball into coverage. You didn't see Greg or AJ do that. Sims did it, he just got bailed out a lot by dropped interceptions

the o-line is a catalyst to bad qb play. our guys are big strong and slow. when half or more d-linemen can get to the qb quickly with regularity, and hit the rb before he can get started, its the ol, plain n simple. while cristobol may be a really good recruiter, we are obviously sacrificing coaching for talent.

The first fumble was our own player knocking it out of Stewart's arms and actually made the tackle on Stewart.

I think the other was close to the same as well.

quote:Bama hasn't had its brand of discipline since 2011. We were the least penalized team because we were the most disciplined team. This lack of discipline is putting the offense and defense in bad situations and we are having to work against ourselves. This isn't the Bama football we had gotten used to.

Fumbles are a function of the player, not the coach.
Sure, you can teach better ball handling, but it's still the player.
Interceptions are mostly, but not as much as fumbles, a function of the player, also.
See Auburn, for example.
I, too, think the players believe, to a point, that all they need to do is show up and win. This is our biggest issue, IMO.

Exactly, nice logic.

People underestimate how smart Gmac and AJ were with the football. They rarely made dangerous throws and Ingram and Trent rarely if ever fumbled. We all know Yeldon and Drakes fumble history and Sims just wasn't the smart QB those other two were.

Ingram fumbled late in the 2009 Tennessee game, which gave them the opportunity to win if not for Cody's block. He fumbled on the breakaway run in the 2010 Iron Bowl. Still, you're right that Ingram, Richardson, and Lacy were far more reliable with the ball. Yeldon fumbled deep in LSU territory in 2012 to nearly cost us the game, then fumbled deep in Texas A&M territory the next week, which did wind up costing us the game. He fumbled deep in our own territory against LSU last year, nearly costing us the game. You can put this in the category of "things that have been costing Alabama for a number of seasons now."

Amazes me how some of you continue to attempt to take away from Sims. Sims was 10 times the QB GMAC was and he was better college option than AJ.
I think sometimes people attribute our amazing defense to our QB's play when looking back at those years. GMAC was basically a game manager who handed the ball off. AJ was one until his last two years, both of which we never let him get to far off his leash because when he went gunslinger, things usually turned out badly. Sims on the other hand had a worse OL and DL then both GMAC and AJ, had a young team and still won an SEC title, off the back of his amazing long ball and relationship with Amari Cooper (AJ had him for two years).

No

Sims was 10 times the ATHLETE GMAC was and he was better college option than AJ.
I could better agree with this embellishment in regards to McElroy.

he was better college option than AJ.
Unless you meant "he was better at THE college option than AJ."
And I was never an AJ fan.
Sims was a great story and made Bama proud. But as good as the story was he became Bama's QB because we didn't have a better option last year...nor does it appear we have a better option than Sims this year.
