Become in vogue. I've seen it run a bunch this year. Bama ran way too much, at least it seemed that way, vs OM. Don't think it ever worked and mostly lost yardage.

I would love for us to line up under center, power I and run down hill off tackle more and stick with it even if it doesn't work at first. Eventually it will and will Eventually wear down the defense. Mainly I don't think Bama needs to be a finesse team. Make their arse hate having to tackle a DH with a lead blocker. IDK.

It works from time to time with Drake. It is a high reward/low risk play. If it is dropped, it is incomplete pass. If they tackle you behind the line of scrimmage, it usually loses 2-4 yards, which is not too much different than a negative running play.

The positives are the 69 yard catch and run Drake had the week before and plays like it being possibilities, as well as what that play sets up - backside flares, screens, slants, deep ball, and runs. We just haven't seen Bama use any of the plays it sets up. Everytime we send that guy in motion he either gets it or we go that same direction, as does the D.

As for the when, it, along with the fly sweep (a passing version of the jet sweep), has been ran at the lower collegiate levels for years...the coach who designed it (Bob Stitt) showed it to several FBS coaches/coordinators (Dana Holgorsen, Noel Mazzone, Kevin Sumlin, and others) and they started to adapt it. The fly sweep really took off after the 2012 Orange Bowl when WVU used it several times to rack up 70 points on Clemson...the Clemson D was very confused and could not stop it.

As for the why, both plays are designed to allow your fast skill players to get the ball in space while at full speed (I think the fly sweep does it better and is harder to defend)...I think it, along with other spread techniques, is also a good way for less talented teams to better compete against more talented teams, especially ones with traditional defenses.

Seems like the past few years, offensive innovation has far surpassed the defense...haven't seen anyone come up with anything really new on D in many years...

The problem is that you have to send the guy in motion and snap it at just the right time. This makes it really simple for any defender to jump the snap.

If the players would fricking block, it would open up. Kelly let the OM defender run right through him and disrupt the play.

I really wish we would get a true fricking fullback who's primary goal it to blast open holes for the runningback. I don't care if they run it out of the pistol, I, wishbone, spread, etc.. Just run the fricking football and keep running it until the defense shows they can stop it.

I agree...but I guess if the defenders were consistently jumping the snap you could use that against 'em by faking the same play and goin' with a hard count every now and then to keep 'em honest...

That's also why I think the fly sweep is harder to defend...you still have to get the timing down but it's harder for the defender to judge the snap...

Malzahn made it cool. It used to work very well.
