What is traffic from T-town to Bham after games

For the first time ever we are driving after the game to Birmingham (live in Mobile). What is the traffic like and should we take an alternate route?

I've seen it bumper to bumper the entire way, and I've seen it move fairly well. It usually is fine once you get past Mercedes. Still heavy, but you're moving. Lot depends on kickoff time. Night games, it's obviously heavier. Afternoon games, some people hang around town a little longer so it's not as bad.
There really is no alternate route to take. There are alternate routes leaving Tuscaloosa to get to the interstate, but from Mercedes on, that's pretty much it.

82 doesn't go to Birmingham.

You can cut over when you get to Centerville. Come out around Calera/Montevallo. You're in Birmingham in an hour and a half, tops.
82 to Centerville, AL-25 to Calera, I-65 to Birmingham.

I don't really think it's very bad at all anymore, especially with the finished 3 lanes.
Depending on whether you park on the river side, downtown or the north side of campus depends on how to get out, but generally you poke until they let you on the interstate at Skyland/Cottondale/Mercedes and it's pretty open until 459.

Wait an hour or so after the game and it isn’t too bad.

We usually park close to downtown. So take 359 to I20?

Probably depends when you leave. I haven't ever parked downtown, but in prior years when we camped out at a house behind Tut we would either go down 15th past McFarland, follow it as it turns into Veterans Memorial then merge onto University in Cottondale.
Or, and this would probably be my suggestion, 15th Street to Hackberry/Hargrove, over McFarland, under 20/59 and then it runs into Skyland. Left on Skyland then you pop onto 20/59 at Cracker Barrel. The interstate moves much much better now with the extended 3 lanes down past Mercedes.

Gotcha. That just seems out of the way, but then so is the 216 route people take. I honestly can't remember it really being that bad on the interstate in recent years. Since they added a third lane, it's made it much easier.

I hope you like red tail lights.
There are a few back road that may help save some time, but I'm not sure.
They have, though, improved getting away from the stadium better now, than in years past.

If you're parking downtown take 359 to the interstate. Traffic will be heavy but it'll move along. HWY 11 runs parallel to the interstate but is a two lane road and could also be heavy which would be worse. As others have said, it'll be slow until Mercedes exit then pickup.

I'd suggest having something to do after the game. Leaving right after a game, especially a night game, is going to result in some pretty heavy traffic most likely.
That's kinda to be expected, though.

Grab a bite to eat after the game - you shouldn't have any issues, regardless of time.

it's been better this year, than last year, now that alot of the construction on 20/59 got finished past Cottondale.
I park downtown (use the shuttle), and my general route is to take Greensboro south, to either Skyland or 37th street, and go east and get onto 20/59 on exit 76. If it's bad on that exit, I'll take that side access road that connects with Buttermilk/Exit 77. If it's still bad, there's a couple of back road that connects to highway 11.

This seems the way to get out. The six lanes begin between Exit 76 and 77. i'd expect the traffic to flow OK from that point eastward/northward.
