What is it with Alabama and QBs?

Since 1990 we have had the following QBs starting at the beginning of the season:
Gary Hollingsworth (1990)
Danny Woodson (1991)
Jay Barker (1992-1994)
Brian Burgdorf (1995)
Freddie Kitchens (1996-1997)
John David Phillips (1998)
Andrew Zow (1999-2000)
Tyler Watts (2001-2002)
Brodie Croyle (2003-2005)
John Parker Wilson (2006-2008)
Greg McElroy (2009-2010)
AJ McCarron (2011-2013)
Blake Sims (2014)
Jake Coker (2015)
Jalen Hurts (2016-Present)
Of that entire list of players, only Brodie Croyle and AJ McCarron had NFL-caliber talent (though Hurts might join them soon). Why have we had so much trouble recruiting that position over the last 30 years or so?

Alabama has been a rushing team for most of those years. That has been our main staple. Also you missed John Parker Wilson and Greg mcelroy both serves multiple years on NFL rosters. I am not sure if Blake is on one right now but that would almost be ever quarterback we have had since 2003.

While this is true, Alabama has always been a rushing team. Yet we have had legendary QBs play at Alabama in the past. QBs such as Bart Starr, Joe Namath, Kenny Stabler, and (to a lesser extent) Richard Todd.
I mean...Todd was the sixth overall pick in the 1976 NFL Draft, despite taking snaps out of the wishbone his entire playing career at Alabama.

While true, neither of them saw substantial playing time and both were out of the league within a few years of entering it. And while they played in the NFL, I wouldn't describe them as QBs with NFL-level talent.

The average NFL career length is 3 years.
And the definition of "NFL-level talent" is "any talent at the NFL level."

Not only did they not have NFL caliber talent, I count 7 of the 15 who were just plain not good.
Then when you factor in that Starr, Namath, and Stabler were all much better at the next level than they were during their time at Bama (none of them went All-American), it looks even worse.

5 national titles in there.
Should be at least 2 more though.

It's not surprising that drop back NFL caliber QBs wouldn't want to play for Stallings or Franchione. I suppose Croyle signed in spite of Franchione. Even with DuBose, those type QBs knew that coming to Alabama, which emphasized the run game, their stats and opportunity to improve might not be as good as at other programs that did rely more on the passing game.
The college game has significantly changed in the last 10 years, and Saban has signed a few that most "experts" thought may be NFL prospects. Phillip Sims was the #1 prospect by at least one scouting service in the drop back passer category. The teammate that beat him out, McCarron, still plays in the NFL. As noted above, Wilson and McElroy had a few years in the NFL. If Coker had 4 years with a good QB coach, he might have had a chance. We're not yet sure about Blake Barnett or Tua. If Hurts improves his passing game, he may get a chance. Recruiting a great QB is often a pig in the poke. A lot of highly rated and recruited QBs just don't pan out. We've had our share of those.
Looking at most SEC teams, they've not had a ton of NFL QBs either. UGA and UF have probably had the most. Speaking of UF, I suppose any QB would have had fun playing for Spurrier. Much more so than Coach Stallings.
As Wayne Huizenga said when St. Nick Saban decided to leave Miami for Alabama: It is what it is. As Al Davis said when he still had good sense: Just win, baby!

I think we may have one on the roster now that has NFL talent. We shall find out.

Things are looking up now. While Jalen isn't an NFL QB, he's a playmaker that could possibly develop NFL passing skills. Unlikely but possible.
Tua looks like a potential NFL level talent.
We're also getting interest from some highly coveted 5star QBs for this class

Doubt we hit on a 5 star in this class but we don't need to. Give me the DL and secondary instead. Agree about Jalen and he doesn't have to have a NFL arm to dominate the league this year. If he can just be able to hit some and stretch the field our running game alone will be unstoppable. Can't wait.

I've been saying for years that Alabama is overdue for a first round/Heisman caliber QB. The kind that is an absolute gamechanger.

Most of those guys are/were solid college QBs. There aren't many teams out there who wouldn't happily take that list.
There just aren't many stud QBs at he college or pro level.
Look at the trouble LSU is having finding a guy who is simply serviceable.
I do wish Brodie could have played with Saban's talent...he would have been amazing.

Barker played in the NFL for 3 years.
JPW spent 4 seasons on an NFL roster.
McElroy was in the league for 3 years and probably could have hung on and still been there but would have been a career backup and knew it was time to focus on next stage of career.
It's not like we've been a QB factory, I'll give you that, but name another SEC school that's sent guys to NFL consistently who have panned out at QB position.

Hollingsworth was POY his Jr year. Homer Smith was his QB coach. Had the head coach had not resigned there is no telling what kind of records he would have set. 6-6 and the arm of a fastball pitcher.
Stallings came in and ran the ball. His sr year was lost. By the end of the year he was toast.

Blake never made it to the NFL at all. He got cut from the CFL after 9 days.
He's had a couple of try outs as an RB since then, but I don't recall anyone picking him up. Maybe plays on a practice team or something now, not sure.

Born in 61'.
jmho, but,Most really great College QB's are stars,"I'm the Man" types. Some exceptions.
That's not the kind of player that Bama fields. We want a QB that is totally committed to the Team.To sacrificing his Stats as well as his body for the Team.
Running the Ball and stopping the Run win in the SEC.
At least,I believe that's been Bama's formula for most of my lifetime.
I think Bama would certainly want any great QB,but most great QBs don't want Bama.
