AL.com Practice notes from 9/30

quote:

Quarterbacks and wide receivers later spent parts of the period working on connecting on deeper throws with the receiver coming off double-moves.

Quarterback Jake Coker was consistently paired with wide receiver ArDarius Stewart throughout the period.

I see we are still trying to get that Coker to Stewart pass. Maybe UGA wont cover him on a play and it will actually connect for once.

Nope! All you have to do is sit short as a safety, blitz a linebacker and Coker'll have to short arm it as the lb will be balls deep by then.

I really hope we either get that connection going or we stop trying to force it.

And for the love of God throw it to Drake.

Why not deep pass to Ridley?

12 play, 8 minute drive > 99 yard TD Pass IMO.

so I hope they stop trying soon if it's not going to happen.

i'd rather see us throw screens to Stewart or even toss it to him out of the backfield. the guy is a really good athlete but i dont see how his skill set warrants all these deep balls.

I'm fine with the deep shots. Just not the ones in double coverage or where the CB turned and bailed at the snap and is 5 yards in front of Stewart.

Hasn't worked all year. Blocking and Coker's release are probably a part of that, but when we've tried short passes to him it doesn't get much. And when we try deep passes to him either he can't separate, the OL can't block long enough, or Coker makes a horrible throw. So how do we get him the ball? Don't for a while. Then in a couple of games go back to him.

Most of the time I can tell presnap if we're running or passing and I can tell when we're running screens. I'm sure defenses can too. We need to figure the offense out soon.

If you scroll down on that Al.com link, there is a link to some highlights from Saban's last press conference - he said that Coker is getting more confident - that makes me happy...

Well, he's not saying he's not getting anymore confident, or he's loosing confidence...so I'm happy...

And how do we get those drives without the threat of a deep play to keep defenses honest?

Why are people shitting on the team trying to work and improve on a weakness?

You don't HAVE to throw deep to keep the defense honest.

Short and medium length throws can accomplish that fine.

If you substituted a screen pass to Drake for every deep ball we've thrown this year we'd likely be undefeated and have half the interceptions we've had.

The goal of an offense is not to be "balanced" or to show off, it's to move the ball and put up points, and throwing deep is something we obviously are not particularly strong at and trying to force it just is killing our drives and turning the ball over.

We can win games and championships without chucking it deep to feed some sort of ego thing Kiffin has.

you have to take deep shots to be able to go on those long drives. We don't have the offensive line we had in our championship years, its nowhere close. We can't just line up and pound it down the throats of good defenses anymore.

- our screens were getting jumped against ole miss, hopefully the qb's will be more adept at leading the short passes and screens so the rb/receiver can quickly turn upfield, but that was also a problem.

Tell me one team which has won a championship recently without having the threat of throwing it deep?

Just one. Don't dare say any of our Alabama sides, because we have always had a deep threat.

You need the deep threat to open up other options like intermediate passes and the run.

The problem is our personnel. They need to get it right.

He is a freshmen. They have tried to throw to Ridley deep a couple of times. Much like Christian Jones, Saban is stuck on Stewart and idk why.

I don't want to see us throw another screen to a WR as long as Coker is starting.

Stewart is our most inconsistent receiver and Coker is our most inconsistent player on offense. Trying to get these two to hook up is along the lines of Haley's comet.
