What about in '00? Antoine Pettway was part of that class.
That '02 class ended up being pretty damn good. '01 was good with Shelton and Williams, but Kennedy Winston and Chuck Davis ended up being huge contributors to that Elite 8 squad.
Just our fricking luck to get matched up with UCONN that year also. Brings up a big question: do we have some of the worst luck in the tournament? Think about how talented our '76 squad was, and they get fricking Indiana and Bob Knight in the Sweet 16 who finished 32-0. You want really depressing? Look at Alabama's tournament history. The perception of Alabama basketball could be drastically changed had Alabama not just blown opportunities in the tournament- especially in the sweet 16.

That was the Wallace class. He was ranked anywhere between #1 and #7. The only other player in that class ranked was Demetrius Smith, #39-77.
Pettway, of course, was a walk-on.

Yes, no doubt. Bob Knight to this day says that the 1976 Alabama team was the 2nd best team in the country that season.
Other years were the same....
- In 1982 we lost by 5 to #1 seed North Carolina in the Sweet 16. That, of course, was the Carolina team that had Michael Jordan and beat Georgetown in the National Title game.
- In 1987, as a #2 seed, we get matched up against the hottest team in the country, Providence (with Pitino and Billy the Kid Donovan lighting it up) in the Sweet 16 and lose 103-82. Providence then beats #1 seed Georgetown by 15 and goes on to lose in the Final Four to Syracuse (who lost by 1 to Indiana in the title).
The Gottfried era was just mostly us being terrible fundamental teams who were exposed in the NCAAs.
Still, it's incredible how many teams we have had that were legitimately Top 10-15 teams that couldn't break through to the Elite 8 or Final 4. Not once did we just get hot or get the breaks in the bracket or something to get there. Tennessee has a very similar track record, while LSU is basically the polar opposite.

Make matters worse, Alabama shot 68% from the FT line (go figure) and held Jordan to just 11 points.
Another game Alabama just completely blew was against Loyola Marymount in '90. I wouldn't be too bitter about this because of Hank Gathers death that year. However, this is just another example of Alabama blowing it in the sweet 16 to a team they should have beaten.
I doubt we'll ever see Alabama make a final four run. It's really infuriating to see programs like Mississippi State and Georgia to have at least one final four run. Bama has more NCAAT appearances, 3 more sweet 16 appearances than both of those programs combined, the same amount of elite 8 appearances, and yet not at least on final four run. I really hate being invested into Alabama basketball the way I am.

Yep - the saving grace there was that the next game would have been UNLV. Don't think we'd have had much shot there.

Definitely not, but another elite 8 run for the program doesn't hurt.

That 2005 night against Mississippi State will always be one of my Top 5 college sports memories.

My favorite Bama player is Alvin Lee. The guy was deadly from 3. He played in the late 80s. I think he died in 99

All of these high ranked classes have led to sweet 16 and elite 8s. Now next year we bring in the best class in Alabama history and I think we have a pretty good coach. I'm so excited to see what he can do. And that #5 class doesn't even include Daniel Giddens who was a top 50 player.

ugh, too many underperformers for my liking.

That 2011 class flopping still kills me. In 2012 we had so much potential to turn out to be a nine seed

Didn't help that Grant pissed off the entire team, and one of our most electric players (Tony Mitchel) left. That team was destined for the sweet 16 too. Won the Puerto Rico Tip off against teams like Wichita State, Purdue, and Maryland. Beat Oklahoma State and VCU too.
Still remember being so heartbroken after Georgetown came into Coleman and beat us on the last second and ended our home win streak. Then of course going toe-to-toe with Kentucky in Rupp. Wasted year.

Yep. I still don't know what went down that broke that team up. In the open floor they were electric.
I remember the last play of that season was just a Lacey iso three- typical Grant

'02 was my first year I really followed basketball. It's symbolic of the whole time: promising start, disappointing middle, tragic end

Did Gerald Wallace sign in 98?

He was apart of the 00 class
