For those visiting Athens this weekend, welcome. This is consistently one of the best road trips for visiting fans every year. I posted this to the Tiger Rant back in 2013 for our game against LSU and I made a few changes to add for this year.

Bear in mind, I haven't been back to Athens but a few times since I wrote this and I've made the correct changes to the best of my memory. If any UGA fans want to make suggestions or corrections, feel free. And this is clearly a pretty rough guide to Athens

Thanks guys and good luck on Saturday

First, as many of you well know, Athens cops are not exactly lenient (I know from experience). Be smart and don't carry alcohol in the street at any time. You can carry on campus but the second you step off of campus you’ll get busted. You will get a ticket. DO NOT JAYWALK. If you aren't making a complete arse of yourself you should be alright.

BARS

Bourbon Street- Freshman bar most nights but on gamedays the crowd shifts to encompass all age groups. If you're under 21 and looking for some tail this is a good place to go. They play a good mix of country and 80's music.

General Beauregard's- country bar. Similar age to bourbon though more older (junior and senior) students frequent it as well. They play loud country music for the most part. Sometimes they even have a band upstairs. Get the Dixieland sweet tea. It's $6 but they serve it in a mason jar and it is delicious.

City Bar- Similar crowd to General's. Play a decent mix of rap and 80's. This is the kind of bar where everyone knows everyone. It's a very fratty bar. It recently came under new management and I haven't been there in a while so I don't know what changes have been made but from what I hear it's minimal.

Magnolias- Has a large upstairs and downstairs with pool tables. Drinks are served in glasses instead of plastic and they have a pretty nice beer selection considering the type of bar it is and who it caters to. Plenty of tables and places to sit and always a large number of good looking girls. Probably one of my favorite bars.

BlueSky: I’ve only been here once but as far as I know it’s the only bar in Athens with a rooftop other than Sideways and the Georgia Theater. It’s easy to miss being right above Taco Stand on Broad street and is pretty unassuming but it’s a really cool bar and will probably be less crowded than the others.
On The Rocks: Definitely one of the smaller bars in Athens. Off of Clayton Street next to Whiskey Bent and Moonshine. Can be a good crowd depending on the night.
The Pub at Gameday: A little ways away from the other bars on Clayton Street. Typically means it’s not as crowded. This is a good place to watch the game if you don’t have a ticket. Solid beer selection.

Sandbar- I don't really go here much because for some reason it reminds me of a bad tequilla shot I took and makes me want to throw up. Other than that it's a pretty cool island themed place that sits right next to City Bar.

Silver Dollar- Larger bar with a dance floor and patio. Western themed murals on the wall and pretty much plays whatever is popular at the time. This will probably be one of the more crowded bars you come across.

Boar's Head- probably the biggest bar in Athens. Has a large outdoor patio and a big downstairs with a large island style bar. this is a very popular bar but doesn't usually get crowded until about 12:45-1.

WhiskeyBent: another freshman spot where girls dance on tables. Has a pool table upstairs and a small downstairs area. Nothing special here unless you're simply looking for tail.

9D's: Undergrad bar but it's hit or miss on the crowd. Some nights it's just filled with sorostitutes looking to dance, other nights its packed with gays and just generally weird people. I typically avoid it but some people I know love it. Oh, and they play strictly 90's music if you couldn't figure that out...

Bar Code: They have beer pong tables. That’s all I got for this place.

Pauly's- you'll definitely find undergrads here but usually they find themselves at one of the above bars by the time midnight rolls around. They have a great beer selection. Upscale mood.

Genko's- similar style as the undergrad bars, just with an older crowd

Walker's Pub- real small joint with a really nice beer selection and top shelf liquor

The Globe- restaurant by day, grad student bar with great beer by night.
Allgood: Has a large upstairs and downstairs. Good mix of people between young and old. Can usually get pretty packed on game weekends. This tends to be where a lot of UGA alumni go.
Cutters Pub: Just a dirty dirty place. Y’all will feel right at home.

Those are the only older bars I've been to so I can't really speak for any of the others.

Obviously there are plenty more bars in the downtown area, I just frequent these the most or know them well enough to give a description. Downtown Athens is truly a play land. Have fun. Oh and no covers :)

Restaurants

Cali N Tito's- Cuban food and in my opinion the best food in Athens for your money. Everything I've had there is outstanding. You can bring your own beer for $3 and it's cash only.

Last Resort Grille- American cuisine. probably one of the most loved restaurants in the downtown area or all of Athens for that matter. They have really good dinner items but you have to stay for the dessert. The cheesecake is the best I've ever had. It's that good.

Depalmas: Excellent Italian food on Broad Street downtown. Great meal for the price. Highly recommend.

The Globe- Restaurant in the day, bar at night. Excellent burgers with a great beer selection. Pub style offerings.

Shokitini- Good Sushi place downtown

Clocked- I've never been but from what I hear it's the best burgers in Athens. Everyone simply raves about this place. Looking at the menu it's the kind of place you'd find on Man v Food or Diners Drive Ins and Dives.

Farm 255- Organic spot next to clocked. They have a limited menu from what I recall but it was really good.

Athens Bagel Company: It’s a bagel shop with a full bar. Enough said.
Big City Bread: Cool selection of different types of food. American style with sandwiches and such. You can get quail.
Copper Creek Brewing Company: Brewery that serves food. Pretty tasty.
East West Bistro: Mediterranean and Asian fusion. Definitely a good date spot, a tad more upscale.
Five Bar: focuses on five easy choices in each section of the menu: apps, entrees, wines, beers and brunch
The Capital Room: A tad more upscale, good American style food with a twist. Solid drink menu.

Then you have quick spots like Little Italy (cheap pizza), Trans-metropolitan(great pizza and beer), Barberitos (kinda like Moes only it doesn't suck), Mellow Mushroom, and of course Waffle House.

Athens is full of awesome restaurants so there's no way to list them all. Just park and walk and discover them for yourselves.
Breweries
Terrapin: Great beer, large outdoor area, closes at 7 so you’d have to get there around 5 or so. Great place to start the night.
Creature Comforts: this is a new brewery downtown off of Washington Street I believe. They have fantastic beer and it’s a genuinely good time.

Tailgating
The two places to set up tents are Myer's Quad and North Campus. North Campus is right across from Broad Street at the Arch and goes all the way to the library (about 400-500 yards. Our administration is full of pricks and have restrictions that won’t allow people to set up until 5 hours before gametime. If this somehow fits your timeframe then this is a good place to set up because it’s the most beautiful part of campus and there will definitely be room. Only problem is loading and unloading. W/ the decks and lots being first come first serve, you’re probably going to be lugging your equipment far because you won’t be able to get a spot near your tailgate area.
The other big spot is Myers Quad. It's on the south end of campus just up the hill from the stadium if you follow Sanford Dr (the bridge outside the stadium). This is where gameday set up in 2008 and again in 2013 for LSU. It gets really packed here, especially since we couldn't tailgate at North Campus for a couple years. I’d be wary because it’s going to be almost 100% students, most of whom are raging assholes.
Other than that, just find a parking lot and set up there if you can. Clark Central High School, just off of Milledge, is a good place to go. It’s just off of Greek Row and typically large amounts of away fans. Should definitely be parking there.
Another option is just to tailgate at the bars. A bunch of them will be open in the morning so you can drink and watch gameday and the noon games too. This is my plan. I’ll be at Magnolia’s if y’all wanna come hang out.

Other than that just find yourself a spot somewhere.

If you're coming over and don't have tickets the best place to scalp is on the bridge before the stadium.

Let me know if y’all have any questions. Been looking forward to this weekend for a while.

I'll add to NOT attempt sneaking a flask into the stadium. 2 people I know were caught with them in 2008. One was refused entry and they tore his ticket up at the gate, and the other was escorted out of the stadium. The latter said there were several ushers in the visitor's section looking for violators. He said he saw 2 other people escorted out.

I've never been checked for a flask and no one I know has either. If you go in the gate at the bridge, there's a very small chance they'll check you because that gate bottlenecks thousands of people. They really don't have time to pay down anyone if they want to keep the line moving. Just don't act like a moron and you'll be fine.

Probably better advice, and I wasn't there to witness what led to the 2 people I know being ejected so it is second hand info. I will say a 3rd person I know that went to the game mentioned the Sanford Stadium staff being more unwelcoming than he was accustomed to on road trips. Perhaps that night was an outlier, or perhaps it was that particular section. Both of those people were in the upper deck.

And I don't say any of that to trash UGA or UGA fans or anything. I didn't have a problem the 2 times I've been to Athens for a game(neither for a Bama game), and thoroughly enjoyed my visit. Just relaying some incidents I heard occurred in 2008 to warn folks to stay on their toes.

All UGA fans,

Thank you for a pleasant week in the secr!

It is very unusual for this place.

Good luck Saturday, but I still hope my Tide wins.

See you in Atlanta for championship!

I must be getting old. I swung by there for the Carolina game and grabbed one and it was AWFUL. Almost undrinkable. Almost.

It's just sweet tea and bourbon (at least it used to be). I don't think it's really supposed to taste good, just frick you up.

I'll be headed there on one of the tailgate busses done by a bar in Buckhead with about 60 or so of our Atlanta based Bama crew

Looking forward to a good time (in the rain supposedly)

They've changed it or this bertender fricked it up. It was really, really sweet. It had some kind of liqueur in it.

Athens is nice. UGA fans are terrible. Stadium sucks.

One of the most overrated road trips in the SEC
