Ok, this is all from the LinkedIn "University of Alabama" page (which has some pretty cool metric breakdowns). This includes all individuals on linked in who list themselves as "graduates" of the University of Alabama. An interesting difference though. Here are the "WHERE THEY LIVE" stats for those who started in 2013 or later (37,968 alumni)

WHERE THEY LIVE
1. Tuscaloosa, AL (12,202)
2. Birmingham, AL (4,532)
3. Atlanta, GA (2,589)
4. Huntsville, AL (1,210)
5. New York City, NY (999)
6. Mobile, AL (958)
7. Nashville, TN (907)
8. Dallas/FTW, TX (881)
9. Washington, DC (694)
10. Montgomery, AL (613)
11. Chicago, IL (598)
12. Houston, TX (563)
13. Charlotte, NC (376)
14. Los Angeles, CA (362)

4,097 of the 37,968 listed live in either NYC, Dallas, DC, Chicago, Houston or Los Angeles. That's 11%. And keep in mind a large chunk of the "Tuscaloosa" number are probably just current undergrad or grad students, so they really shouldn't be included, so that % of total is probably more like 20-25%.

And this is the same thing but for those who attended between 1970-2000 (47,371)

WHERE THEY LIVE
1. Birmingham, AL (9,356)
2. Atlanta, GA (4,888)
3. Tuscaloosa, AL (3,221)
4. Huntsville, AL (2,169)
5. Mobile, AL (1,911)
6. Nashville, TN (1,393)
7. Montgomery, AL (1,366)
8. Washington DC (1,026)
9. Dallas/FTW, TX (883)
10. Houston, TX (806)
11. New York City, NY (737)
12. Decatur, AL (661)
13. Memphis, TN (505)
14. Gadsden, AL (492)

Insane difference

Yep- that's either some of our first assignments or last assignments in some of the level 100-200 courses. For instance, when I took TCF 286, one of our last few assignments was creating a linkedin or wix account and reaching out to people and interviewing them.

Nashville has been a growing destination spot for a lot of our younger grads. I've actually been actually branching out to people out there in hopes of maybe a summer internship or job after graduation.

Wouldn't the UA LinkedIn page also include anyone who has worked at UA? I might be wrong about that.

Anyways probably over half the companies I meet at recruiting fairs and networking stuff are recruiting for out of state positions. I've interviewed for more out of state summer internship positions in Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, and even Portland than in state, only in Birmingham and Huntsville (not counting my student job).

I'd like to stay in Alabama or at least in the southeast, so I wish our state government would get it together and attract some more internships and jobs.
