Alabama had 8 designed runs in the second half, tied for their fewest in any half this season per @ESPNStatsInfo

After Bo went down, we gave the ball to the RB a grand total of 4 times in a game where we were trying to protect a lead. No wonder we lost.

Hard to run the ball, with the defense having 8 or 9 guys in the box.

Even a two yard special runs time off the clock.

You got to take with the defense gives you, if the D is loading the box. You pass to open up running lanes. There wasn't much running room, most of Bama's rush yards came on 5 plays.

But balance it with what your freshman QB is also giving you.

How many total plays did we run in the 2nd half? We only had 66 all game ( compared to Clemson's 99)

If they're dropping 8-9 in the box, you can always add more blockers if you're committed to the run. I hate that excuse for abandoning the run. If you're a one-dimensional offense, like we were, you don't have to pretend to be balanced

Is it though? The RBs averaged 5.78 yards per rush.

Yeah, like we were able to make them pay for loading the box. Run wide, go goal line package, but run the damn ball and the clock. Even if it's not successful, going 3 and out running the ball burns a helluva lot more time than 3 and out incomplete passes.

We can debate the run/pass stuff all day but I wasn't a fan of doing the HUNH when we could barely stay on the field. When the objective is to keep Watson off the field and give our defense a rest, maybe snapping it with 20+ seconds still on the play clock isn't the best idea.

Sad to think this is what our offense has become. Let's run more so the 3 and out series will burn more clock.

I guess Sark was trying to avoid the delay of game penalties we've been having lately.

I'm not going back a rewatch it to determin, but there were several times I noticed that the game clock did not start again too quickly after an out of bounds play. I'm not sure what the normal restart the clock procedure is, but it seemed to me inconsistent. One time, I am almost certain that we ran out of bounds on 3rd down, then as JK was setting up to punt, the game clock did not restart until right before the snap.
I certainly won't use this as an excuse, because, if anything, we probably wouldn't have had time to even run our own late 4th quarter drive.

Alabama's offense is fun to watch when they are explosive and scoring tons of points....but when it bites them in the arse, it makes me long for the methodical AJ McCarron offenses.

Yeah. I miss the pro style offense and McCarron. I even miss Coker. The first few games last year I thought he was going to be a bust, but he improved a lot and was fun to watch. Pretty fearless too.

This year, the offense was cranking pretty good early in the season, but in retrospect, the SEC wasn't very good this year, and the defenses learned our tendencies.

I don't think you have to choose between the two. Clemson had a dynamic offense but they didn't exactly score on any explosive plays against us. They simply drove down the field. Under McElwein, we might've driven the ball down the field but we weren't always assured of a TD in the red zone. It shouldn't matter if the offense is spread or pro style, an elite offense should be able to make explosive plays and drive the ball down the field.

Our inability to "matriculate" the ball down the field Monday night wasn't a new development. We had been struggling with it all year and it goes back to Jalen's inability to be a consistent passer and Kiffin's refusal to stay disciplined when a team couldn't stop our RB's.

That was an odd second half in general. I think the us against the world mentality that the coaches were drilling into the players may have gotten into their own heads. There were several times when I expected Saban to take care of the pass interference issues, but when I saw what looked like, "We aren't calling pushoffs," mouthed by a ref to Saban and noticed that Saban just walked off rather than asking to speak with the head ref, I didn't feel like we had the usual attitude of imposing our will on all aspects of the game.
