Neither was TR when he came in.

True. That's why he was second string as a freshman and got a ton of carries. There also wasn't 2 other 5 stars on the squad either. I could see Najee work himself into the 2 deep this year and I could also see him blossom late like Henry did.

Tua looked okay but pump the brakes on him pushing Jalen. He was slow making a lot of reads and delivered balls late.

Jalen looked much improved, was going through progressions even though our Oline was getting worked. (Pretty sad when you get a strip sack on a non-contact QB).

Improved Passing game (Robert Foster looked good too)
Running Game - Dline and LB's definitely didn't give much up but Naije's definitely going to get playing time he's a stud.

Biggest Concerns:
Oline
Secondary - Lots of talent just needs time to figure it out in my opinion.

Rashaad Evans and Tony Brown seemed to be the vocal leaders of the D for now.

Completed over 50%

Seen this posted a few times. Shouldn't he absolutely be doing that? If he was below 50% there would be real problems? I guess he was at 50% against Washington and below it against Clemson, but he finished the year over 60%.

I'm wondering if they focused on mostly on the lower percentage passes that Jalen struggled with last year. That would explain the apparent "goal."

Fair enough. I did see a quote or two about the DBs being surprised about the long balls, so maybe it is that

Yes. He should.

As I've posted elsewhere, Saban is doing all he can to be positive about Jalen. He wants positive press written about him. He's trying to boost his confidence.

Can you imagine Saban being happy about McCarron completing "over 50%" of his passes in a scrimmage?

"Over 50%" could mean anything. What was the play-calling like? What sort of down and distance or field position situations were they in? How much of that was against the 1st team D? How many throws were dropped or thrown away?

Without knowing any of that there's not really much that can be read into it. Not to mention that 60-something % would still be "over 50%."

It would also be over 30% too.

Someone mentioned Hurts was above 60% last season. How many of those were Kiffin's bubble screens?

If he's above 50% and most of the throws are 10 or more yards downfield I'm tickled.

Najee - but can he block? That will likely determine how much he plays and when

A significant amount of Hurts plays were intermediate to deep throws. I don't think it's a good idea to publicly give a lot of details about a closed practice but say goodbye to those jet sweeps I think they ran one. Third string qb has a long slow delivery kinda defeats the point of throwing good balls. If Hurts had played Clemson like he played that scrimmage we win that game because most of his TDs were deep balls on 1-1 coverage.

I don't get that part. Even if he has some mechanics to work on, doesn't throwing a good ball kind of counter the bad? I mean, the point is to connect with the receivers. Lots of qbs, even some nfl qbs, have had bad mechanics. Bernie Kosar comes immediately to mind.

Anyways, if one guy can improve, I guess the other guy can.

I think what he is saying is that it gives the DB quicker reaction time. When the QB starts his throwing motion, the DB is tipped off, and can be in much better position due to the long, slow delivery. It can be the prettiest ball in the world, but if the DB is sitting there in position, having lunch, while the QB goes through his long windup, it could be all for naught.

I will agree that some players can be successful even with bad mechanics.

I'll wait until A-Day before developing even preliminary thoughts on Jalen's improvement. Then I'll wait until the FSU game to really evaluate it. I've been following this stuff long enough that I've learned never to trust spring scrimmage gossip.

The thing I like is that unlike last Season,if the #1 QB leaves the Game, there will be an effective replacement.

Last Season it was all but a given that if Jalen went down,Bama was done.
