The Alabama men’s foursome of Steven Gayle, Cameron Hudson, Marlon Humphrey and Alex Amankwah broke the nine-year-old school record in the relay by more than a full second, running 3:06.05 to win the fifth heat of the 4x400-meter relay and finish third overall among a field of 19 relay teams. The Tide’s previous record of 3:07.29 was set in 2006. Only Texas A&M and Nebraska finished ahead of Alabama. The Tide’s time is currently the fourth-fastest in the world this year. Amankwah’s stunningly fast 45.5-second anchor leg on the relay pushed the Tide to the new school record. Gayle ran the first leg in 46.9 with Hudson going 46.3 on the second leg and Humphrey clocking a 46.9 on the third leg.

Some will argue coming out of the blocks nets a faster start than from a slow jog waiting for a handoff. Not to mention out of the four MH was not training all year for track.

Both Brown and Hump have been doing really well in sprints but yet have a higher ceiling in hurdles, their specialty of choice. Can not wait to see these two lined up on the field together.

3:06 is flying.
IIRC, we ran around 3:30 - 3:40 in high school. I think we were all around a 0:50+ / leg pace. And we had a decent 4x400 relay team.

You'd think so, but I'm thinkin' Bama/Saban looks for more than just speed. I was always surprised that Sylve has never been used in the return game...he's a sprinter that's been one of the fastest at Bama since his arrival and he returned kicks in high school...remember him returning a kick-off in the Under Armour game for a TD...yet I can't recall that he's ever actually returned a kick/punt since he's been here...

Saban is too conservative when it comes to kick returns.

It takes big balls to return kicks/punts, so maybe some of these guys are a little timid.

Do you guys remember how awkward Trent and/or Julio were?

I agree with the other poster as whoever says that coming out of the blocks in a relay nets a faster start in a 4x400m relay race has little experience in the relay races of track & field. I've followed track and track splits for years and I've never heard this view.

Good, maybe he will fix our secondary getting burned on the deep ball next season.
