We've got to get better in FT shooting though. Going 15-27 is bad and will likely cost us a game that comes down the road when we lose by 1-5 points.

I like our pace of play, but the team still showed some inability to bank open shots. Twenty-three percent from the 3 isn't going to beat Dayton.

The good news is that even though 15-27 is awful, we started out 4-13 in the first half (31%) but improved to 11-14 in the second half (79%).

I changed the title a little bit. Let's keep this thread going all season with thoughts about the team, our season and the next opponent(s) on our schedule.

All recruiting info should still go in the recruiting thread that Bird started in July.

If someone wants to start a separate thread for each game, then by all means please do. I most likely won't be doing any game threads this season as I have done in the past.

Jamychal Green with the clutch 3 for the Grizz tonight against OKC

Now getting the post game interview with the local TV crew

Keeps playing his absolute butt off for this team.

eta: I've got class during the game tomorrow, so someone else will have to do the game thread

eta2: I am just gonna post some JAM things in this thread too if y'all don't mind (let me know if you do).

He appeared in first timeout "sketch": Green with Envy w/Jeff Green

Chasedown block (He looks good in the red & white throwbacks)

“At this stage of the season, we knew we could have a better opportunity to go to Dayton and try to play with some mental and physical toughness, poise, passion and patience,” Johnson said. “We’ll see if some of the positive habits that we’ve laid the foundation with in practice can carry over into a hostile environment on the road.”

quote:

“I’m excited to go in there,” Tide guard Retin Obasohan said. “I’m excited to go to battle with my brothers and see what the game will bring.”

quote:

“Obviously for our kids, playing on national TV in the early part of the season is great,” Johnson said. “I think it’s great for people to see what we’re doing with our program. Hopefully, the light will shine bright on our players because they’ve been working hard.”

Vegasinsider.com lists Alabama as a nine-point underdog.

quote:

While there is a ton of excitement around the program, Johnson tempered expectations. Johnson said he hopes his demeanor can be a “calming influence” and give the players “a lot of confidence” in the matchup.

“We’re going to have to do a lot of growing, but at the same time, I have an enormous amount of patience with our guys,” Johnson said. “They’re not going to get it overnight. This is the first rodeo for a lot of these players, and us as a staff together.”

It'd be nice for CAJ to pull this one out in game 2 of his first season here, but I wanna just say in case it gets ugly (and the season may not be pretty at times) just remember this is year one, I hope no one hits the panic button if we have some bad games.

It is the third time Alabama and Dayton will play in the last five seasons. Johnson said the Flyers will play in Tuscaloosa next year.

quote:

Dayton is expected to start four juniors, led by guard Scoochie Smith, and freshman 6-foot-11 post player Steve McElvene.

quote:

“In watching them on video, they’re a tough, hard-nosed team,” the coach said. “They really convert on both ends of the floor. They set great screens. They’re a veteran team. They know what they’re doing.”

quote:

Alabama jumped on Kennesaw from the opening tip. The Tide led 12-1 early and 21-5 about 11 minutes into the game.

“The first 11 minutes of the first half we were really good on defense,” Johnson said. “Then we fell apart in the last nine minutes. I think they scored 27 points in the last nine minutes of the first half.

“The second half we were just average. They looked at their mistakes yesterday and also where they were successful. We try to show a balance on their videos. It’s not all negative here.”

Johnson said the offensive pace was “too slow.”

“The wings need to run harder, the bigs need to run faster, we need to push the ball faster,” the coach said. “We’ve got to take and make our shots and make better decisions with the basketball.

“All correctable errors – and a lot of those errors have to be corrected when you play such a terrific team like Dayton.”

The Flyers lost two of their top three scorers from last season.

Their top returning scorers are 6-foot-6, 235-pound forward Kendall Pollard and point guard Smoochie Smith.

Pollard was tied for second on the team with an average of 12.7 points per game.

Smith averaged 9.2 points and a team-high 3.8 assists.

Dayton also got big contributions from two young players during its season-opening win over Southeast Missouri State.

Freshman forward Ryan Mikesell scored 21 points while shooting 7 of 9 from the field and 5 of 7 on 3-pointers.

Mikesell also recorded eight rebounds.

Sophomore guard Darrell Davis had 15 points and eight rebounds in 23 minutes.

Three Keys to Victory

1. Make the Freshmen Uncomfortable. Archie Miller doesn't usually rotate players as much as other coaches do. His team last season only went seven-deep during their NCAA Tournament run, for example. However, he usually can rely on a number of veterans taking up those minutes. This season, at least two freshmen, Mikesell and McElvene, will be relied upon to play major roles for Dayton. With this being only their second career game, Alabama has an opportunity to knock them off rhythm and make them uncomfortable. This is especially important against Mikesell, who was the leading scorer in their opener. If Alabama can force someone else to have to be the scorer, the Tide could have a chance at the upset.

2. Take Care of the Basketball. Limiting turnovers is always a key to winning basketball, but this is especially important against an efficient terror like Dayton. The Flyers have won games under Miller by making the most out of their possessions and forcing their opponents into bad ones. Alabama cannot afford to lose possessions and give Dayton extra ones. Especially not on the road. We could see more of Coleman in this game for that reason.

3. Make the Free Ones. Alabama was an absolutely atrocious 15/27 from the free throw line against Kennesaw State. The Tide will not beat Dayton with that kind of performance.
