I've been wanting to make this topic for a few days now, but I wanted to watch the Arkansas game over again before posting just to be sure I wasn't crazy. Well the first half at least.

A common refrain in the gameday topics, this past week's especially, is that teams are blitzing more defenders than our oline can handle which means there should be wide open receivers. Against Arkansas at least, this wasn't true at all.

Of the plays Jalen was pressured on they never brought more than six defenders. On the few occasions that they did bring six we had six blockers. In fact one of their pressures came when they rushed five against six blockers (and Cotton just about took Jalen out indirectly by blocking a defender into a head to head hit).

And it's not as if he's just standing in the pocket all day. On most of these plays he's pressured almost as soon as he finishes his dropback.

Having said all of that throwing against pressure is certainly a weakness in Jalen's game. And there have definitely been times where he's left a clean pocket and essentially sacked himself. But by and large our oline flat out has to be better in pass pro. If that's how they look against Arkansas I shudder to think what Clemson's or Ohio State's loaded front would do.

Pretty much this. Yeah, the greats make defenses pay for blitzing with their arm, but Jalen is still young and hasn't acquired that trait yet. He may never, not all do, but right now he hasn't developed that skill so the pass pro has to tighten up. Maybe the bye week will give them a chance to settle down and get it figured out.

Cotton has been abused so often, I know the staff see this week in and out. I am hearing Pettibone is pushing for the spot.

Boz, since Jedrick Wills is a beast at RT and Williams will be here at least one more year why can't we let Leatherwood play some guard until a tackle position opens up again? What are you hearing?

Honestly I wish they would try anyone else at cottons psotion. I think Wills is just a little too young at tackle to take over. Doesn’t know all the plays/coverages. I’d love for Leatherwood, Pettibone, Wills, whoever to get a shot at RG.

It's puzzling that nobody has taken over his spot. Seems like the Arky game would've been a good time to see if somone else can do better playing RG along side the 1s. Same goes for UT game.

Rumors that Womack might shift to guard with Wills playing tackle.

Cotton just gets beat right off the snap, nothing you can do with pressure immediately up the middle

Yep Cotton just either is soft or doesn’t get it.

Maybe he's too fat and/or not athletic, quick, mobile, agile, enough, etc.

Kirby Smart and Mel Tucker I think could really give our offense trouble with there play calling. Kirby learned a lot of Saban, and I notice a change when Mel came in as well. UGA has a really good defense up front which could give us big trouble. Hopefully, we get things worked out by then if we get to play them.

Bingo. He has the size and strength but he can't move. Quicker dlinemen are his kryptonite. I know Leatherwood and Wills want to play tackle but either would be a beast at guard imo.

Cotton has been wildly inconsistent since earning the job last year. I almost wonder if they are afraid to make a change for consistency reasons on the OL. Guess we'll see out of the bye.

See if he can learn Center with that gaping hole there in 2018. BB and JC graduating, and Brandon Kennedy having to come back from a broken leg.
