Alabama to start QB Blake Sims vs. WVU
August 28, 2014 11:13 pm ET

ATLANTA -- Blake Sims will be Alabama's starting quarterback on Saturday against West Virginia barring any unexpected last-minute changes, according to a source. Touted FSU transfer Jacob Coker will be the backup but is expected to play against the Mountaineers.

This is considered an open audition and both quarterbacks will have their chances to strengthen their case in the Georgia Dome.

CBSSports.com reported Tuesday that Alabama planned to use two quarterbacks similarly to 2011, when starter A.J. McCarron split time with Phillip Sims.

Blake Sims, a fifth-year senior (and no relation to Phillip Sims), has completed 23 of 39 passes for 244 yards and two touchdowns as McCarron's primary backup. Sims had a good fall camp but Coker might be a better long-term fit for Alabama's pro-style system

Should make for an interesting game. I am curious if they will let him do any of the read option plays or if it will be our typical offense.

After seeing some of the runs he's ripped off in the past with the 2's and 3's it makes me pumped to see him run some of it with the 1's.

He has worked hard and been a team player for very long time. Hopefully he can produce an awesome season.

Hard work and patience pays off I guess. God please just let Sims not make bad decisions and put the defense in bad position.

This kid is fricking electric with the ball in his hands.I dont think that gets brought up enough.
Our offense is going to be a major headache for DC's. If we can get some decent play calling our O will be nasty.(I think Kiffin will do well) .One of the best skill groups Ive ever seen.

Its going to be exciting to watch until Coker takes over against Uf ? if so hopefully they let Blake get some snaps as well he deserves it and brings a different dimension to our O.

Can Sims really be worse than Marshall ?

sims is 6 ft 0 and has to roll out does not match what we want to do does not match our talent....no offense to sims ...put him in as rb - power sweeps power sweep hb option reverses and mo

Unless saban came out and said it, I don't believe it. Not saying sims won't start the game but whoever jogs out onto the field first is who it'll be to start. That still doesn't mean there is a starting QB.

What do you mean he doesn't match what we want to do or match our talent??? If Coker was the best player he would be playing. We obviously want a QB with some mobility because the last 2 we got were somewhat mobile. Sims waited and deserves his chance. If he fails let him fail so everyone can see why he isn't playing. Tired of hearing we don't play black QBs.

Expected. Now I wonder how long he plays until Coker comes in. Saban technically said they wouldn't do what they did with AJ/Sims, but both would play. We know he doesn't really mean they won't rotate, so I wonder what that'll look like.

Give em each a quarter?

Give em each a half?

Every drive?

Every other drive?

Flip a coin?

I also wonder who will throw more passes. Their drives could be longer or shorter depending on the size of plays and starting field position, but I'd like to see them get a close to even number of throws. 13-17 each.

I think if Coker wins the job, Sims will still have a role. He'll get some packages to get a few runs/throws out of a game. I could see a non starting Sims throwing the ball like 3 times a game and getting a few designed runs.

That isn't true and you know it. Coker is still developing chemistry and timing with the offense. They're both playing for a reason. No one has actually won anything yet.

Me too, but he'll still have to earn the job. I've seen a lot of people who want Sims to start just because he's black. I've seen a few who won't want him to start fort he same reason. Hopefully everyone just watches both play against WVU and however many other games they play in the competition and understand that we won't know who is going to be better this year on this team until then.

Reading Saban's comments, I still think Coker is being groomed to take over as soon as possible. Everybody loves Sims, including the coaches. Who wouldn't? But talent-wise, I just don't think he's cut out to run Bama's offense. Don't get me wrong, if he lit the world on fire and held onto the job all year, nobody would be happier than I. But, TO ME, it looks like he's going to be used while Coker gets settled in and wins the job from him. I do, however, agree that Sims will still get playing time and special packages. I also wouldn't be surprised to see him on the sidelines in some capacity next year.

Agree 100% with this post.

I'm just hoping they both get a decent number of throws tomorrow. Saban says we'll be vanilla to settle them in, which kinda sucks, but oh well. He doesn't wanna run over WVU anyway. Hopefully he lets them fling it vs FAU and Southern Miss.

I love it. While initially I thought it would be just a nice gesture now I know that they believe that Sims earned the start.

But to be fair to all the players, every player has the opportunity to compete and somebody has to beat somebody out to have credibility with your team.
quote:

"We have faith, trust and confidence in Blake Sims," Saban said. "We're not going to evaluate Blake and he doesn't have to look over his shoulder while he's playing. I think there may be some occasion where the other guy deserves an opportunity at some point in time this season to show what he can do."

Coker may very well take over, but reading CNS comments it sounded as if right now he hasn't beat Blake out
