Everyone complained about Shula's offense including me. Darby up the middle was tough to watch. Was it a talent difference only or do you think there is a certain characteristic to Shula's offense that just made it not work?

Compare the offensive lines to now. And yes, there was a talent disparity and lack of creativity compared to now.

Well, talent, yes, also running the same play in every similar situation.

JUMBO PACKAGE OFF TACKLE

PLAY ACTION SLIP PASS TO THE FLAT

RINSE REPEAT

Seriously? It's talent, discipline, and everything else under the sun.

My favorite anecdote of the changing of regime was the look of the sideline after a game. Under Shula there was trash and disgarded athletic materials everywhere. Under Saban it was clean, as if a mass of humanity hadn't just spent four hours covering the sideline.

It was a very predictable offense.

I still remember Simeon Castille screaming in Shulas face on the sideline when we kicked a field goal inside the 5 in 2006 after 3 straight jumbo package fails.

Why even try to compare.

Shula was so out of his depth as the head coach. I choose to just remember him as a good QB.

I guess no one remembers "Darby up the middle" when we had talent and experience on the offensive line. It actually worked and he rushed for more than 1,000 yards in back-to-back seasons.

The talent was mediocre and inexperienced on the offensive line in '06. And Darby was hobbled by a lingering injury. Hence why "Darby up the middle" was so tough to watch that season.

Darby and Ray Hudson were both really good backs at Alabama, not to the level we're used to now, but those guys could play

Meh, the only competent offenses we had in 4 years of Mike Shula was the pre-Prothro injury in 2005. Everything else was inefficient and incredibly unexplosive.

Darby got 1,000 yards from 30 to 30. Then we'd get to 4th and 2 and kick field goals.

The '04 offense was solid until Brody Croyle went down with a knee injury in the third quarter against Western Carolina. The injury bug was bad that season. The only reason why Darby ended up playing was because we lost our first and second stringers to injury.

Oh I remember. I spent significant time in the basement getting my balls hazed off after every awful agonizing loss.

It was solid against Utah State, Ole Miss and Western Carolina. Would it have been better? Probably, but those games against bad teams don't mean much.

It's more than just probably. Virtually the same team went 10-2 the very next year.

Well yea, but they were all a year older and the defense carried that team on their back for 9 games (and, as I said in another thread, may be the least appreciated and most unheralded group in Alabama history given their performance and subsequent insane NFL success). The offense was atrocious after Prothro broke his leg.

Literally every game post Florida was a freaking offensive grindhouse.
