Sources: Mario Cristobal could be leaving Alabama

Oregon head coach Willie Taggart has offered Mario Cristobal a senior staff position, including coaching the offensive line, sources tell FootballScoop. We are told that Cristobal has not accepted the position at this time and could wind up remaining at Alabama as Nick Saban has sought to retain Cristobal. However, we understand that Oregon is not the only Power 5 program seeking to persuade Cristobal to leave Tuscaloosa with Florida head coach Jim McElwain also considering Cristobal should Mike Summers leave the program.

Alabama plays for the national championship on Monday and recruiting goes live next Thursday, so a decision is expected shortly after the title game.

Cristobal is in his fourth season as Alabama’s offensive line coach, handling tackles and tight ends this season, (Brent Key joined the staff as guard and centers coach in February) and was named a finalist for the FootballScoop Offensive Line Coach of the Year last month. He also serves as the Tide’s assistant head coach and recruiting coordinator.

Alabama’s offensive line won the inaugural Joe Moore Award in 2015’s national championship season, given to the best offensive line unit.

Prior to Alabama, Cristobal served as the head coach at Florida International from 2007-12, peaking with a 15-11 with two bowl appearances and a share of the Sun Belt title in 2010-11.

Cristobal made his name in coaching as a top recruiter in South Florida. A former Hurricane, he jumped into coaching as a graduate assistant at his alma mater in 1998, then coached offensive tackles and tight ends and later the entire offensive line on Greg Schiano’s Rutgers staff from 2001-03. Cristobal then returned to Miami coaching tight ends and the offensive line from 2004-06.

I hate the title of this article because it sounds inevitable that he will leave when all that has been offered to him is the same job at a different location. Not sure why he would take that job, particularly in Oregon.

Our fanbase has never been a collective fan of Cristobal, right? Or am I mistaken? I know he is a good recruiter.

Which by the way I think will diminish greatly now with Strong, Kiffin, Richt, and Frost all in FL so not sure his recruiting ability in that area will hold up.

I guess this as good of a thread as any to point out how poor the guards have played this season.

Staff should have stuck it out with Cotton at RG IMO.

He made some really bad mental errors in the LSU game, but this offense has not been the same without shank or cotton at RG.

Cristo has been a fabulous recruiter. No doubt about it.

would be pretty surprised if he went to Oregon. I could see him take a job at UF if the money and the title/responsibilities were right, but Oregon would be a shocker.

I'm sure Saban, if he wants him to stay (and why wouldn't he), will make sure his Bama offer is greater than or equal to the financial terms offered elsewhere. I would imagine it'll be up to Mario to decide if he wants to stay or if he's ready to move on.

If I'm not mistaken, Key is in charge of the interior line (centers & guards) while Cristobal is in charge of the tackles and tight ends. The tackles and tight ends have blocked pretty well this year...

Christobal has been the key to our south Florida recruiting, one of the biggest recruiting hot beds in the country. We lose him our recruiting will take a dive there. Some of the best WR recruits come from there and I would hate to lose that pipeline.
We should try to keep him,pay him enough to where others cannot match his salary. He is very good.

Hopefully, Leatherwood and Jeudy are enrolled by Monday. If Mario leaves before Leatherwood enrolls, Bama could lose him.

I disagree, RG has been solidified since KK took over.

Cotton just made too many big game mistakes, which you can't risk down the stretch.

His longterm may be higher than KK's, but his floor is much lower right now too. So much they no longer considered him a Guard.

Shank could have been a good one, but he was a waist bender and penalty machine. He would have still likely been the RG if not for the concussion.

Sources tell @BamaMag any talk of Mario Cristobal departing the Alabama coaching staff at this time are premature.

I don't think so. Cristobal is competing with McElwain and Fisher, just like last year. The only new player is Richt.

Kiffin, Frost, and the rest are competing for a lower tier of players than the top schools.

That's not a stretch considering Kirven is a senior and is only starting due to injury.
