We just can't disguise things as well with how fast teams snap the ball nowadays.

Saban said it himself. He used to have 50-75 defensive packages. Now with the new offenses, we've cut down to just a handful.

I think that if the offense could take slower drives and run the clock (doesn't necessarily have to be an offense like that of 2012, keep in mind '09 had a somewhat pedestrian offense) We could dictate the pace of opposing offenses because they'd want to wear out the defense.

I find the whole notion of this thread hilarious. These are college football players I have serious doubts any of them were ever "scared." We had a serious talent drop off in the defensive backfield, MLB, and on the O-line. Plus we've been struggling to adapt to all of the new high powered offenses. A lot of this stuff just feels like hyperbole

I thought the same thing. Really get tired of people saying we had this team scared or whatever. Complete BS.

The change in our own offensive philosophy has also hurt the defensive stats.

And we have a winner.

People tend to forget that we ran a ball-control offense then. Our defense had a lot of rest and had to play less snaps because our offense would grind out long drives that took up many plays.

Our offense had to become more multiple and possess the ability to score points. That said, I think you're correct that we do need to go back to an offense that prides itself on controlling the ball. For all of the hoopla about HUNH/Spread Offenses, they can't beat you if they are on the sidelines. "Same things win that always won."

Its not like we grabbed the "scared" quote out of thin air. Our starting LB is the one who brought it up.

College football outside of the SEC has found its way into the SEC, and teams that play old school ball are having trouble adapting. If you don't have a QB who can sling it all over the field, good luck.

So early on in the Saban era, TV talking heads always discussed Saban's exotic blitz packages and how we always showed people things they had never seen.
I don't remember the last time something like that was said about our defense.
Because we still do the same shite, and everyone has seen it now for 7 years.

I didn't read everything but from my player source:

We have gotten some serious swag back with leaders like Drake, Henry, Ragland, Ashawn, and attitude spikes by Tony Brown.

This Defense is going to be good bottom line, and our attitude is nasty right now. There were and will continue to be scraps at practice everyday like back in 09.

Staff are releasing small hype videos to get the players out of their minds, this is going to be really interesting so buckle up.

True..to an extent IMO.

IMO, the biggest problem the HUNH Offense provides a Saban/Smart defense is it attacks the mental advantage we had.

1. Our Saban/Smart defense was partly built on the premise of "out thinking" the offense pre-snap. We would show a look, back out...then the offense would audible and then our Def would audible.

2. A traditional offense is easier to out maneuver in this type of chess game on the field than the HUNH.

3. I believe our players are as well coached as ever, know the defense as well as ever, etc. And can probably make pre-snap adjustments as well as ever.

4. However, the tempo has negated much of that. (Give HUNH credit, at least in regards to attacking Bama, it has severely limited that strength.)

TL/DR Version:

HUNH does not allow Saban defense to give pre snap looks/disguises and/or audible as effectively.

HUNH isn't new. How come we can crack it on here but the guys getting paid millions are still getting scorched by some of these teams. Are we stubborn? Are our adjustments just not good enough?

I respect everyone's opinion, but this is pretty much how I feel.

2009, 2011-our schedule was much easier from top to bottom than in 2014. and we barely beat mediocre Tennessee and Auburn teams in 2009. And in 2012, we lost to TAMU, and barely beat UGA.

My point is that there is a fine, fine line between going all the way and losing multiple games, and SEC teams are as strong as they've ever been.

I am very pleased that we were able to win the SEC last season. Last season was fun.

I am excited for this season and from I have been hearing from the locker room, the kids are pumped up. Should be good stuff. I'm past the point of talking championships and want our team to be a team, play for each other etc.
