Google has the game listed under a CBS Broadcast for the afternoon slot... my understanding was that CBS had run out of Alabama broadcasts for the regular season. What occurred that has allowed CBS a sixth one?

As an aside, I'm not fretting on CBS. I actually prefer Verne and Gary to virtually all of the ESPN crews. I don't think they're perfect or anything, they've just become such familiar faces to my fall Saturdays that I've grown to like them a lot.

ETA: I meant "Re" in the Subject line to mean "Regarding" and not "Replying." Sorry for any confusion.

CBS probably made a deal to get it. I think it has everything to do with Derrick Henry's Heisman run and CBS wants to be the network to get that "Heisman moment" whether it be against Auburn or against Florida in the SECCG. Or, the off chance Auburn pulls the monumental upset, I am sure CBS would love that as well.

From wikipedia so take it for what it's worth.

quote:

CBS can only air five games of any particular SEC Team a year per contract, unless they pay a contractual fee to ESPN. In 2014, CBS had aired five Alabama games and because of that did not carry the 2014 Iron Bowl as it had in previous years, giving airing rights to SEC contractual secondary ESPN. Instead CBS aired the Egg Bowl and both Mississippi State and Ole Miss were highly ranked teams. In 2015, even though CBS again had aired five Alabama games, they decided to pay ESPN the contractual fee and are airing the Iron Bowl as it's CBS Game of the Week.[2] Neither CBS, ESPN or SEC will divulge what the contractual fee is.

While Alabama may have been on CBS 5 times this year, it only counts for when they're on at a 2:30 kick-off. Since the LSU game was on prime time, it did not count towards Alabama. The IB next week will be our 5th afternoon slot.

An article said it was a "mutual agreement among all parties". Which could mean a lot of things. You have a top 15 matchup in Florida-FSU, that CBS is giving up to show the Iron Bowl. I guess ESPN thought that was a better ratings draw?

The reason CBS wants Bama.

quote:

CBS bet big on the state of Mississippi and lost.

The Mississippi State/Mississippi Egg Bowl drew a 3.3 overnight rating on CBS Saturday afternoon, down 62% from last year’s Alabama/Auburn Iron Bowl (8.6), but up 50% from the 2012 Iron Bowl (2.2). The Egg Bowl drew less than half the overnight of this year’s Iron Bowl, which aired on ESPN (7.2).

They made a deal with the SEC to get a sixth Bama game. I'm sure ESPN didn't care because they probably don't think it will be much of a game.
