On the Illegal forward pass play that was called....

before the ref explained the penalty i said to myself they finally got this call right...i honestly thought they was going to penalize ole miss for illegal blocking down field. to make a long story short....while reviewing if the qb was past the line of scrimmage why can't they also review how far the lineman are down field blocking...it's a tough call to make so they say so i don't see what the problem would be on certain scenarios as this. that was a HUGE momentum swing!!

It certainly sucked but the momentum swing that hurt the most was the fluke 65 yard TD pass right after halftime.
We would have gotten the ball back on the next play, hopefully without fumbling the punt return, and had a chance to tie it up with a TD drive.
We can't win them all.

The second Kelly started his throwing motion I jumped off the couch and screamed "YES!"
I knew they were being called for blocking 6 yards down field on a fricking pass play.
I think this play and others like it are a big fricking problem and I'm not scared to say it. They aren't subjective. It wasn't a missed PI. It wasn't a team getting away with holding. That fricking call has to be made.
IMO it's the same as having 15 guys on the field. That shite just doesn't get missed. "Oh shucks, they had 15 guys in the field on that one!" Nobody ever says that. It's obvious as hell and not subjective. Blocking THAT far down the field can't be allowed. That play is exactly why football is starting to get a bit sketchy. I hate the direction it's taking.

I'm sorry I called you names btw. Not cool at all.

Why did the coaches not ask the refs to check for illegal downfield blocking? We made such a stink about it after the Auburn game in 2013,yet do nothing today.

I'm sure they'll send that play to the SEC office, but I'm not sure the blocking downfield is reviewable.
Posted on 9/20/15 at 7:30 am to imjustafatkid
It's not reviewable, but it should be on a scoring play. It's the same illegal play from Auburn 2013.
Posted on 9/20/15 at 7:40 am to chattabama
Its not reviewable but if they are going to pick apart which body parts were behind the LOS, then it seems complete illogical to ignore the illegal linemen who are roaming 5-7 yards down the field. Its like we are taking crazy pills.

It's become an epidemic in college football, and I think the best way to curb it would be to make it reviewable.
There is no "right" way to play that play as a defender. If you stay with your man, then you allow the QB to gash you with the run. If you abandon your man, then it's just an easy pitch and catch for them.
The play is going to continue to be called again and again until something is done about it. Losing because of it once is bad enough. Twice?

Ole piss got all the bounces And breaks. OMFG Coker And that frickING int.

The Coker hate is ridiculous. Same ppl that defend Sims for Ole Miss last year are hating on Coker for the loss this year.
Coker actually did better than Sims.
The difference was two fumbles, a freak play, and an illegal play. Coker lead the offense to scoring 5 TDs lol

At the game last night I couldn't tell by replay where Kelly was, but looking at this I'm seeing 2 completely missed calls. Don't know how they can say he isn't past the line of scrimmage, and well then there's the obvious with lineman 7 yards downfield blocking
Posted on 9/20/15 at 2:05 pm to Bamafan4evr12
He was not past the LOS. They got that part correct by the way the rule is written.
Down field was missed.
But we put ourselves in the position to have a call/no call have a huge impact on the outcome.
If we protect the football they could have run that play all night long and we win.
Plenty of blame to go around but imo, it still comes back to simple ball security last night.
Also, if karma exists we are due a game winning touchdown from a missed fg that bounces of the NG's helmet straight up in the air, gets fought over by 21 players on the field and somehow our 1 player that stays out of the melee because he thinks it is a lost cause gets the football stuck in his facemask and he returns it for TD while he cant see.
ETA: The pic in OP is deceiving. Video shows he had both feet in air when he released the ball and back half was on/behind the LOS. Pic is where he came down.

One blocking downfield is not reviewable and two five turnovers lost this game not a blown call on a pass play. Our offense has no rhythm at all, we have won with far less talented QB but guys like McElroy were leaders. Blake Sims was a leader.

Yep.
I also was going nuts about why we where not running the ball late. Their DL was cramping up. We had worn them down.
If we had lost it because we could not run at that point, so be it. But to put it in Cokers hands, who the coaches were so impressed with that they benched him to start the game, just makes it even more difficult to understand.
All that considered...still ball security. BTW, no fumbles from the RBs last night...and we still didn't run the football down their throat and "Make their *%$ quit"

Is there a situation in all of football where a penalty can be called on a replay when it hasn't been called on the field? I don't think so.
Posted on 9/20/15 at 6:07 pm to BamaGradinTn
I didn't think penalties called on the field were reviewable except for targeting. So basically we got screwed by the refs calling the wrong penalty.
Posted on 9/20/15 at 6:55 pm to The Spleen
Actually, now that I think about it, illegal touching by a receiver who has stepped out of bounds can be called on a replay, and Saban requesting a review on such a play led to our win over Ole Miss in 2007.

Saw linemen downfield called 3 times today in the NFL and that's just in the 5 games I followed. If the NFL refs can see it @ NFL speed, college refs should be able to see it.
