Nobody saw his 4.51 40 time coming. That is absolutely INSANE. OJ Howard is gonna tear things up in the NFL, and I think he'll go down as the most underutilized player in Alabama history. I mean there are some top receivers that run around a 4.51.
It'll always remain a mystery why he was so rarely used. He could've been a huge deep ball threat.
I guess we won't know how good he can be until he gets into the league

We didn't have a QB that could get it to him. I can't imagine how good he would have been with AJ throwing to him or if Coker had figured it out sooner than the last couple of games.

Scheme didn't help, but OJ wasn't the best at routes either early in his career.

I see everyone sayin he was under utilized. But did y'all see the stats of the other tight ends today on the screen? All of them were in the ballpark. Bet those teams think the same of there players.

How many of those TE ran 4.51 at 6,6 240 pounds and look like they were chiseled out of stone.

Do y'all not remember him dropping tons of passes early in his career? Is it just me? He always struggled making tough catches in traffic. 3rd downs he wasn't that reliable. Is it just me? I would think his hands had a lot to do with not getting the ball thrown his way more often.

His being under utilized won us a national championship. The secret weapon.
But its true he was not a natural At pass catching or even very good at blocking & he seemed awkward trying to catch and run. But to his credit he improved tremendously during his career. Seems like his real potential is in front of him.

Those are DB's that can't catch him.

He was 251 at the combine, not 240. Let that sink in.
Also, I almost guarantee he ran a faster 40 than either of the top 2 WRs will at their products days, Mike Williams and Corey Davis. Oh wait, Corey Davis isn't gonna run the 40, it's 100% that Howard is faster than him.

The frick? He was the best blocking TE in the country last year according to PFF rankings, and showed great hand strength catching the ball. Especially in traffic.
I swear people don't actually watch what happens right in front of them. Did he occasionally look awkward post catch? Maybe. But he does everything well.
After yesterday, he will be a top 15, maybe top 10, pick.

he was a great blocker ... that's why he was the starter for most of the last two years ...

It's been known he was pretty fast coming out of high school. There was a big thread when he was committed to Bama where he ran a fast 40 at one of the camps

Who down votes this?
I swear some folks on here don't like the truth.

His play seldom was worthy of the reputation fans gave him as basically the best player in Bama history. But he was integral to a national championship and I feel very positive about him and his time at UA. Will miss him.
The fan-made hype train around him was ridiculous and out of control from day one, though. Won't miss that.

Yep. And a lot of our fans trashed him for not catching the game winning TD pass vs Ole Miss in 2014. OJ will be like Julio. Decent college career, but will thrive at the next level. The measurables were always there. He will be great in the NFL for a lot of years.

This is the bullshite I'm talking about.
NOBODY thinks he's the best Alabama player in history, but the hype-train was well warranted. His measurables were off the charts, he was a great blocker, and we all saw what he was capable of on the rare occasions he got the ball downfield.
My point is that he's going to be a monster in the NFL, and a total nightmare for defensive coordinators around the league.
No, he wasn't the best player in Alabama history, but I'd say he was one of the most athletically gifted TEs in CFB history, with good hands, and he was absurdly underutilized.
There was never a season in which he had the most TE receptions in the SEC - let alone the country

Maybe I am off base, but Julio's college career was more than decent. Teams had to game-plan around him, and he broke quite a few school records.

What records did Julio have? I mean, before Amari Cooper rewrote the book.
Posted on 3/7/17 at 10:18 am to harmonics
Record for receptions in a season: 75 (old record 67 by DJ Hall)
Record for yards receiving in a season: 1,084 (old record 1,056 by DJ Hall)
2nd place for receptions in a career: 176 (record is 194 by DJ Hall)
2nd place for receiving yards in a career: 2,604 (record is 2,923 by DJ Hall)
2nd place for receptions in a game: 12 against Tenn this year (record is 13 by DJ Hall)
4th place in career TD receptions: 15 (record is 18 by Dennis Homan)
4th place in season TD receptions: 7 (record is 10 by Al Lary)
Most receiving yards in a game: 221 vs Tenn this year (old recore is 217 by David Palmer) Julio also had 199 yards receiving against Auburn, which is 3rd best total in a game.
So, 'quite a few' wasn't exactly correct, but he still broke a few, and came very close to breaking more.
