I went a couple days back as well. I like the setup. Service was quick and friendly. Prices were solid. You could get a chicken sandwich and a side for less than 7 bucks. I think the 2 or 3 piece plate was around 10 or so. It was solid but nothing to brag about. I'll give it another try at some point though.

Tuscaloosa was so fricking awesome last night. I can't tell you how many people were on the streets, but man I think I high 5ed just about everyone I saw. Holy shite that was fun.

Any locals heard anything else on the Whataburger rumored to be going up next to Academy in south Tuscaloosa?

It's going to be a Steak & Shake there and a Route 66 or something across from the Krystal's on McFarland. The Route place is like Steak & Shake.

Sorry man, I can't find one. I read it in the Tuscaloosa News this past spring or summer, but it looks like they deleted the article or I'm going crazy. I remember reading it right after Milo's opened.

You're good man. Most of the development news that is being reported is about the road work anyways.

I only have one class today, so I may head over to some construction sites and take pics and upload them here. Saw the arch of Hotel Indigo is being established right now.

Aston Martin will decide whether to build its plant in Tuscaloosa or in Europe. Like I said earlier, if they build it next to Mercedes, that reduces transportation cost and gives them the basic frame of the car. It would be awesome for them to come.

Over the past few years (especially following the April 2011 storms,) we’ve all given our input into needs of the city or developments we’d like to see. Apparently, somebody is listening as more restaurants are said to be coming to the Skyland Blvd./AL Hwy 69 S area this year. According to a source with ties to the area, the former Costas Barbecue building is being renovated to house a Captain D’s. Other businesses said to be opening in the same area this year include a Steak ‘n Shake, Whataburger, and Starbucks Coffee.

My parents live two miles from there. South Tuscaloosa is exploding just like the McFarland area.

That's awesome. I'm always in favor of a retail boom elsewhere now. 82 is just too conjested and there are some ugly vacant spots outside of McFarland that could use some development. I'm not opposed of bringing in those chained restaurants.

301 Bistro restaurant opens in 1912 L&N train station

quote:

A new name -- 301 Bistro, Bar and Beer Garden -- lit up last month over a venerable downtown building.

The 1912-1913 L&N Depot, which has seen numerous incarnations since the 1970s, contains not just 20-foot ceilings, a massive central gasolier and original tile floors, but memories. Owner-operators Bill and Bebe Barefoot Lloyd spent six months of hands-on work renovating, but seeking to maintain architectural integrity and ties to the past.

"There's a lot of nostalgia associated with the building," Bill said. "We wanted a different feel, a different vibe, so we wanted to sort of change it without changing it."

"It needed to feel updated and fresh, but with a nod to its history," Bebe said. Working through the Tuscaloosa County Preservation Society, which sought to buy the then-abandoned station in 1972, and L&N Railroad archives in Louisville, Ky., they found more paperwork than photographs; some of the early photo finds adorn 301's walls.

Tuscaloosa and Uber near an agreement. Hopefully it goes better this time around. Lot of bar owners upset at the taxi services here.

Good article writing up about the pizza scenery trending upwards in Tuscaloosa

LINK

quote:

Post Office Pies is the first pizzeria to join Mellow Mushroom in the downtown scene since Old Venice Pizza changed to Cafe Venice in the early 2000s (and then Venice Italian Fusion, before closing in 2010). Three other pizzerias will take advantage of the growing scene in Tuscaloosa, with two already open, and another is expected by the end of spring.

Pieology, a national chain with state locations in Huntsville and Birmingham, offers customizable pizzas and salads. It opened on the Strip in mid-January.

Pyro's Fire Fresh Pizza, a restaurant with four locations in Tennessee, opened its first Alabama store at The Shoppes at Legacy Park on Friday.

And Heat Pizza Bar will be the first tenant in the downtown Intermodal Facility later this spring. The four commercial spaces have been unoccupied since the parking-deck facility opened in 2009.

Hall of Post Office Pies appears to have a knack for knowing when an area needs pizza innovation. Between culinary stints at Gramercy Tavern, Per Se and Momofuku Ssäm Bar in New York City, he noticed his Brooklyn neighborhood didn’t have many late-night food options. He created a delivery service, Insomnia Pizza, and shuttled pies from his apartment to hungry neighbors.

I'll check out the new places, but I'll be shocked if any of them come close to Post Office Pies.

I went in to Post Office Pies a few weeks ago and it was booming. They have a new spot going in the bottom of the bus stop/parking garage down town as well. I don't know how the pizza spot on the strip is doing, I think a burger/wing spot that stayed open late on the weekends would have done well there. We also have a new Japanese spot on McFarland next to Moe's in that plaza. Its called O.E.C. and its express Japanese. Its cheap and decent, nothing to brag about. I love sushi so I will frequent it a good bit

I haven't tried Pieology yet, but when I'm headed to Philosophy around 1, it's usually sort of full. It looks really nice, but obviously, nothing will probably beat Post Office Pies. Especially that it's near Inisfree.

A wing spot there would have been nice, but it would compete with Phils.

I have never understood the love for Phil's wings. They have the tiniest wings I have ever seen. I prefer Innisfree wings with Irish gold sauce anyday.

Never had the wings, but the finger are good. I'm actually craving some Phil's now.
