Cooper Bateman also had a pick-six, this one to Averett. His arm strength is just so limited, that passes over 20 yards not an option. Bateman does have very good east-west and short-accuracy, but is just so physically limited.

Jalen Hurts had two picks, one on the last play of the scrimmage during an obvious desperation throw. But, Hurts also led the drives, or was directly responsible for all of the touchdowns scored during the scrimmage.

The coaches only trotted Hurts out after Bateman and Barnett had each played four possessions. However, once Hurts was in, he dominated the rest of the scrimmage.
Tough decision

I will never disrespect anyone in Crimson, but my oh my how could anyone be comfy trotting out Bateman in Game 1 after what we saw last season. Man he was so bad and very limited on what we could do with him. lol

The scariest thing is the potential for the Tide to get down a couple scores, THEN have to throw in a freshman to save the day.

This. This. And then THIS again. I'm fine starting Bateman and letting Hurts play and win the job that way. But if we get down a couple scores and then bring in Hurts, we could potentially lose.

my whole thing is this....PLAY THE BEST PLAYER

I don't understand the "Hurts is a true freshman, so game 1 lets put in Bateman to limit turnovers and mistakes." ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.... have you heard about the scrimmages and practices? Bateman is making just as many turnovers as Hurts.

Then the argument "lets not put Hurts out there vs USC, he might self destruct early!" Well, it sounds like to me he's running the offense pretty damn good against BAMA's D, the best in the country, so I'd be comfortable in letting him go at USC as well.

Hurts is the best we have, let's turn him loose.

What I REALLY don't understand is, "Let em both get playing time against USC(like that's a rent-a-win), and then hopefully Hurts wins the job I'm week 2 and they go from there."

Mktherfricker!

How can anybody think that's a good plan? On the road at Ole Miss week 3 and we want a true freshman to hopefully win the job against a cream puff in week 2?

If Bateman is the best option then so be it goddammit. But there is ZERO reason to get cute with this thing. Play the better player.

Can Alabama even runs their entire offense with Bateman?

My God.....thank you so much for saying this! Week 1 isn't the damn "Hey, let's trot out both QBs and have a little competition to see which gives us the best opportunity to win games later this season" week. These are the god d*mn USC Mothaphukkin Trojans, a top 20 team in America right now. You have a "QB competition" week vs them and they are going to smoke our a$$. Put out the best players you got (Hurts), and whatever happens happens.

Saint Nick Saban... "when I played, no one knew your name until you made a play on the field. Now? Y'all rub their necks online before they’re even on campus."

That comment reminds me of this......

And reading these boards, I don't know how these coaches ever won 4 national championships in 7 years. Totally wondering how Kiffin won 2 SEC titles and a national title with a utility sub at qb, and a FSU castoff.

I don't even mind Bateman starting. But then what? Throw in Hurts if they get down? Do ya throw in Hurts in a close game? Same goes for if Hurts gets the nod.

What if Bateman has an ok game and Alabama grinds out a close, yet solid win against USC in Dallas? Why would Hurts win the job the next week against a shite team and then lead the boys against Ole Miss?

I'm not trying to explain what I think Saban should do. Just talking about what I've seen from Alabama fans and even the majority of the media.

If Alabama is good enough to seriously dick around with USC, then they're going to be REALLY good this year

IMO, Hurts has time to win the job as the season progresses. But USC and Ole Miss might need to be a packaged deal, no? If the starter gets it done against USC, I think I'd be more comfortable just letting that QB take on Ole Miss.

USC doesn't run the offense to beat Bama. They have some good starting talent, but not a lot of depth. Their starting QB probably won't finish the game.

Their OL will be pretty good. And they have plenty talent. Alabama should win, but I don't think it'll be all that easy.

Can they run their entire offense with Hurts? Do we know that he has a full grasp of the offense? Again, it needs to be said that it takes more than just physical ability to play QB.

Like everyone, I'm stoked beyond words about what we are hearing about Hurts but if the staff thinks starting Bateman is the right move, well, I am going to trust the guy with all the national titles on his resume.

This what worries me and a lot to ask of a true freshman. Set him up in a position to be successful not having to come from behind.

I think Kiffin does so much in game with the offense that it doesn't matter if the QB is a junior

This is because Saban only allows the media to see what he wants them to in a short viewing period. When they come in they see Bateman with the ones or whatever and assume like in the past Saban will go with the more experienced QB from being in the system stand point.

But no one including us fans expected Saban to gamble on that onside kick last year either. I think with Kiffin and now Pruitt we will see a lot more aggressive play calling then what we saw in the past.

I think the only real concern at this point, assuming the hype on Hurts is real and I believe it is, is when the pressure is on does he try and do to much. I think Boz or someone said after the first scrimmage he sometimes tried to create bigger plays then needed or was a little impatient at times. Bateman seems to only have one think that Hurts does not. He knows what not to do under Saban but he still does and why Hurts is pushing for the spot. I think once Hurts demonstrates patience in the pocket he is the starter.

Most teams have a good OL until they play Bama. I must be the only person not worried about this game. I don't care who the starting QB is, Bama will win by 3 TD or more. Somewhere around 38-10.
