Maybe not to this extent, but you could see this coming from miles away these last few years. One reason is because Spieth talks about how great he is all the damn time. The other reason is its been obvious by just watching him. He's always had the talent, just fights himself and is a hot head. Once he learned the tour game, his game, and gained confidence....the wins were sure to come. Even when he wasn't winning, he'd go LOW some days.

As far as the Masters go, not sure he's ready yet. There's a reason it's won so often by older guys. Never seen someone as comfortable at Augusta as Spieth. And when his putter gets hot, he's damn near unbeatable there(it seems).

Some of the long hitters have been able to sorta "cheat" the course recently, but I don't think JT is long enough to do that. He'll have to dissect it like most, and I don't think he has enough experience there or the putter to do it right now.

One of the golf channel announcers was talking about how many amateur wins Thomas has, and on that level his only peer was Tiger Woods.

Fairly high praise.

Very OT, but I didn't want to make a thread about it and only like 3 people give a shite:

I like to follow college golf a good bit, but one issue I had was they wouldn't allow substitutions. It recently just got passed after the problem was highlighted when Beau Hossler (Texas) suffered a shoulder injury and tried to play it out. What happens? Well Texas is forced to forfeit his match, play 4-on-5 against Oregon for the NCAA title, and end up losing 3-2.

I remember following it in the off-season last year, and they said they would not permit it. Thankfully it's passed.

Bud Cauley is -15 heading to the final round tomorrow, two shots off the lead at the Career Builder. I know it's not a marquee tournament this weekend but a top five would be huge for Bud. He's really struggled this year and even last year coming back from injury. He was doing some good things on tour prior to getting hurt.

Trey Mullinax is tied for last (among those making the cut) and Bobby Wyatt missed the cut.

Busey might consider editing the OP to make this thread a discussion of UA guys in pro golf in general.

Cauley is even through 10 holes today but still just two shots behind the leaders.

Kind of surprised Bobby Wyatt's career hasn't jumped off yet. His driving distance is only around 295 and his GIR% is around 70%.

Bud eagled 11 and birdied 14 and is alone at -18 through 15.

great idea for the thread ... some info here on the 8 former ua golfers who have pga card status this year ...

Eligible former UA players include Jason Bohn, Bud Cauley, Justin Thomas, Trey Mullinax, Michael Thompson and Bobby Wyatt. Plus, Tuscaloosa native Patton Kizzire easily kept his PGA Tour card in his rookie year.

These guys near the top of the leaderboard are falling apart. Bud has a great chance.

Bud has faltered a bit down the stretch. Still looking at a top five, but he needed to go a little lower to win. Great weekend for him regardless after the past 18 months or so.

I'm a bit indifferent right now just because when he has come back for brief periods he's been so bad that every comeback has me a bit jaded now. I'm hopeful he will play some solid golf. I think he makes tournaments more exciting when he is playing well.

That said, the game is in much better shape now with the number of exciting players out there than when he was killing everyone. He would make things more interesting for sure though.

Feeling the same. I got into golf early on because he made it exciting. I remember sitting with my dad watching him sink that putt in the US Open to force a playoff, celebrating with excitement. Little did I know that would be his last major win.

Very hopeful he's back mentally. Just read SD is supposed to get a lot of rain, so it'll make the rough at Torrey Pines really thick and hard to hit from.

Bud Cauley, Trey Mullinax, Michael Thompson, and Bobby Wyatt are all in action this weekend at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines.

Looks like Justin Thomas is taking the weekend off. I imagine he'll return next week at Phoenix.

Great round for Mullinax.

Mullinax -5 (T3)
Cauley -3 (T19)
Thompson -1 (T47)
Wyatt +5 (T138)

Leader is at -7, so Trey and Bud are in good shape after round one.

I missed it all unfortunately today. Caught the tale end of Woods' last hole, but did see in the highlights Mullinax sunk a 19-foot birdie. Really did well starting off on the back 9.
