I heard Will Haynie hit a HR over the scoreboard yesterday in the scrimmage. If he can only learn to lay off the off speed stuff in the dirt, he could really help us. Last year he had so many 3 pitch strikeouts. On the bright side, he is an excellent catcher and has a cannon with his arm.

I'll definitely do that. I didn't know anything about it, but there was an open house at the Joe after the LSU basketball game. Man it looks beautiful from the outside. I just hope our fans attend the games. What a difference it would make if it was packed for all games.

What happened to Jamal Howard? He redshirted last year but came in as the top outfielder in the state.

Nevermind. Transferred to juco

From al.com on players adjusting to new stadium

quote:

The guts remain, mostly. But everything else is new in Alabama's rebuilt, reimagined baseball stadium.

Now two weeks before opening night, the Crimson Tide is getting a feel for the 2016 version of Sewell-Thomas Stadium.

"Anything new, it has all the bells and whistles, I think it just lifts you," said coach Mitch Gaspard. "I think we'll know a lot more once we get in it and start playing games. We'll be able to identify more of the stadium and what make it happen. Right now, it just has a different feel to it than what we had before."

The program expects more than 200 former players to participate in Saturday's alumni game. The list includes current big leaguers Tommy Hunter and Alex Avila. Gates open at 11 a.m., CT with the 2016 team facing former players sometime after noon. Tours of the stadium are also beginning at 11 a.m.

The season begins officially Feb. 19 when Maryland comes to Tuscaloosa.

Spectators are in for a new experience from the old Sewell-Thomas Stadium. All 4,500 seats are of the chair-back variety with standing-room sections raising the capacity to 7,000.

"The old ball park did not compare to this," senior center fielder Georgie Salem said. "This is the nicest ball park I've seen so far in college baseball, as far as the undercarriage, and obviously the field and the stadium. It's really exciting. I've been here three years now, and I haven't felt anywhere close to this much excitement leading up to this season."

On the field, players are getting used to different playing conditions. The biggest different in that realm is found in the outfield. The green padded walls were scrapped in favor for chain-linked fences extending from left field to right-center. The fences are considerably taller than the old wall.

"You have a warning track and fence on most fields," Salem said. "You just go 100 percent and play. You don't realize what the fence is like until you hit it, I guess. Hitting a fence like this is would be much better than hitting a big wall. It's definitely taller, so the option of robbing a home run isn't there, whereas it was before."

Balls don't bounce as far if they hit the chain-link portion, but Salem said funny bounces are possible if they strike the padding.

"We're still learning some things," Gaspard said. "The surface is brand new as well, but everything has played clean. We haven't found anything that would affect a ball game from our batter's eye. The little adjustments we've had to make have already been made. Playing balls off the wall that are chain linked versus padded walls, those little things. A lot of those will create a home field advantage for us."

rolltide.com article on alumni game this weekend.

The team is set to scrimmage on Friday and Sunday to bookend the program's first-ever Alabama Alumni Game on Saturday, Feb. 6.

Friday and Sunday of this weekend will feature a pair of scrimmages, with Friday's intrasquad set to start at 3:30 p.m. CT and Sunday's game scheduled for a 2 p.m. first pitch. In between the two intrasquad scrimmages featuring the 2016 squad will be the Alabama baseball program's first ever Alumni Game.

"Our alumni game is free to the public," said head coach Mitch Gaspard. "It'll be great for the fans to see some of those faces come back that have been great players here at Alabama. We're super excited about the event, and we have nearly 200 former members of the program signed up for the day. This Saturday should be a really enjoyable experience for everyone involved."

Alabama's Alumni Game festivities will be open to the public on Saturday starting at 11 a.m. with stadium tours running from the opening until 1:30 p.m. CT. First pitch of the actual game in scheduled in the 12-12:30 p.m. range with members of the 2016 team facing off against some of the most prominent alumni in the history of Crimson Tide baseball. The scrimmage will end around 1:45 p.m. CT, allowing fans at Sewell-Thomas to attend the men's basketball game across the street at Coleman Coliseum.

Fans planning to show up at the alumni game inside "The New Joe" are welcome to sit along the lower concourses, including the right field terrace, to catch all the action. Those in attendance at Saturday's event are also encouraged to take a tour of the newly renovated Sewell-Thomas Stadium at any point while the gates are open.

from rolltide.com on alumni game

quote:

The Alabama baseball team welcomed back more than 200 former players, coaches and managers on Saturday morning to take part in the Crimson Tide's inaugural Alumni Game, which took place at the newly renovated Sewell-Thomas Stadium.

Originally just an idea, the Alumni Game became a reality on Saturday morning with 200-plus attendees on-field, while nearly half of the stands were full with family members and fans of some of the program's most decorated former athletes.

"When this whole project started with the new stadium, one of our goals was to reconnect all the eras and all the former players along with our current players," said Alabama head coach Mitch Gaspard. "I think you can see today, with close to 250 alumni here, we're off to a really good start with what we wanted to accomplish."

The day began with batting practice at 10 a.m. Those in attendance who wished to hit took their swings and then spent the remainder of the first two hours reconnecting with former teammates and fellow members of the Crimson Tide baseball family. George Howell (1949-51), a decorated World War II veteran and member of the 1950 team that claimed an SEC Championship and went to the College World Series, took the first swings in the cage to start the day's events.

Following an alumni photo in center field, the former players put together a roster to square off with the 2016 Crimson Tide squad. The alumni roster was made up of Alabama greats including: Brett Booth, Antonio Bostic, Lance Cormier, Jayson Cox, Vin DiFazio, Taylor Dugas, Allen Dye, Robbie Glenn, Doug Hall, John Hardie, G.W. Keller, Alex Kubal, Casey Lambert, Brandon May, Kent Matthes, Andrew Miller, Scott McClanahan, Jay Shaw, Jonathan Smart, Jake Smith, Cal Tinsley, Roberto Vaz, Ross Wilson and Taylor Wolfe.

Also in attendance were Chicago White Sox catcher Alex Avila (2006-08), major leaguer Tommy Hunter (2006-07), UA's all-time winngest coach Jim Wells, and former Golden Spikes winner and current Arizona Diamondbacks hitting coach Dave Magadan (1981-83).

The final inning saw current Crimson Tide coaches take the field. Hitting coach and Alabama all-time leader for career home runs Andy Phillips filled in at shortstop, while J.C. Wilhite singled during his lone at-bat. The game wrapped up with current volunteer assistant coach Nathan Kilcrease giving up a single to former First Team All-American and current pitching coach Dax Norris.

"This is pretty spectacular; I can't believe the turnout," said Avila. "Just seeing all the guys I played with, guys that played before me, guys that played after me - it's all amazing. Driving up here I was pretty amazed, seeing the whole stadium. This day is pretty special."

rollbamaroll.com preview of season

quote:

Overview

The Alabama Crimson Tide opens their sparkling new 42.5 million dollar stadium on February 19th when they host Maryland in a three-game series. The much needed facility is state of the art and puts the Tide at the very top of stadiums in the country.
Coach Mitch Gaspard returns for his seventh season at the helm of the Tide after a 30-28 season, complete with no true home games. Gaspard carries a 202-167 record at the Capstone and has led the team to NCAA Tournament play in 2010 (Super Regional), 2011, 2013 and 2014.

Gaspard and staff welcome 18 new comers and two veterans returning from injury. Senior left handed pitcher Jon Keller missed the entire 2015 season after Tommy John surgery. Redshirt junior Mike Ozcypok does Keller one better, coming back from missing two seasons, with two Tommy John surgeries.

Newcomers

The newcomers are highlighted by the top three high school players from Alabama from last year, P Brock Taylor, 1B-OF Chandler Taylor and OF-P Sam Finnerty. Also, Fayetteville, N.C. native Cobie Vance, an infielder that was a 16th round draft pick by the Cleveland Indians; Gene Wood, from Flowood, MS, a Parade All-American; and, Alex Webb, the number one high school catcher out of the state of Tennessee.

From the JUCO ranks, RHP Matt Foster from Gulf Coast Community College is a Valley, Alabama native. Tanner DeVinney is a catcher from Grayson Community College in Texas, and Hunter Webb returns to the Tide after a season at Chattahoochee Valley Community College.

Conner Short, son of former Bama All-American pitcher Ben Short, started as a freshman at Auburn, transferred to 'Bama, and sat out last season and is now eligible. For local flavor the team has added RHP Kyle Cameron from Hale County High School and OF Keith Holcombe from Hillcrest High School. Holcombe is better known as a linebacker for the National Champion Crimson Tide football team.

Veterans

Veterans Georgie Salem, Chance Vincent, Will Haynie, Ryan Blanchard, Chandler Avant and Cody Henry lead the returning position players. The rotation is deep with Geoffrey Bramblett, Jake Walters, Jake Hubbard, Nick Eicholtz, Thomas Burrows, Ray Castillo, Colton Freeman, Tyler Adams, Tyler McMurray and Zac Rogers return on the mound.

Position Players

Salem is a three-year starter and will play centerfield. The lefty hit .276 last season and led the team with 17 stolen bases. Look for Salem to continue to play center as well as anyone in the country, and bring more power to his game this season. With his strength, speed and experience he is poised to have a big season.

Vincent is also a three year starter and will begin the year at third base after playing first base last season. The Scott, LA native is a great defender and will look to improve on his .237 average of last year. Haynie, the strong armed catcher, threw out 20 base runners last year and led the team with eight home runs. Avant will move to shortstop to replace Mikey White, a second round draft pick by the Oakland A's. As a freshman Avant hits .266 while playing left field, third base and second base last year.He added 11 stolen bases to place second on the team.Henry, now a sophomore, was the primary DH last season, but played some first base as well. The switch hitter hit .276 and showed a good command of the strike zone, drawing 26 walks in 156 at bats.

Taylor will play first base and should provide much needed power to the team. The lefty swinger hit over .400 in his high school career and added 30 home runs. The Montgomery native can also DH or play either corner outfield position. Taylor is more than just a power guy, and should be a middle of the order guy for the Tide.

Vance is recovering from a broken ankle and should be ready to begin the season as the second baseman. The stocky, 5'9" 205 pounder is said to have some of the quickest hands around according to Gaspard. Webb was a part time starter in left field for 'Bama in 2014, and after a year away, is back to try and win the job full time. The Phenix City native hit .382 at Chattoochee Valley last year.Wood, who played SS in high school, will battle Webb for the starting nod.The lefty swinging, righty throwing, Wood hit .500 as a high school senior and .596 as a junior.

Right field candidates are Holcombe, Blanchard and Finnerty. Holcombe hasn't played since his senior year in high school, and will also have some football duties to attend too. The linebacker is a 6'3" 240 pound specimen that can run.Blanchard had a horrific knee injury in 2014 and never was completely healthy last season, but is back and ready to go for his senior campaign. Finnerty, the freshman from Birmingham may also contribute on the mound.

DeVinney, a switch-hitter, will split time with Haynie behind the plate, and can also DH at times. The Allen, Texas native was a Big 12 All Freshman selection at Kansas State in 2014, and hit .297 with 12 home runs at Grayson CC last year. Short and senior Daniel Cucjen will fight for playing time at shortstop, second base and third base, as they are versatile enough to play all three spots.

Pitching

The pitching staff is deep, and has a good mixture of experience and youth, righties and lefties and starters and relievers. Junior Geoffrey Bramblett returns as the leading winner from last season, sporting an 8-3 record with a 3.81 ERA. Sophomore right-hander Jake Walters had an excellent freshman year with a 4-4 record and 3.36 ERA. Two years ago Keller was 5-2 with an outstanding 2.97 ERA, and three years ago Oxzypok was 5-2 with a 3.02 ERA as a freshman. Eicholtz, now a junior, arguably has the most upside of anyone on the staff and looks to have a breakout season.

Thomas Burrows returns for his third year as the closer and the left-hander's velocity is up to 94 MPH. Senior Ray Castillo joins Burrows for the one-two punch at the back-end of the game and sported a 3.12 ERA in 24 appearances last season. Jake Hubbard a hard throwing fifth year senior and has been through the wars and should help the team in the middle innings.Foster is a hard thrower that will defiantly be in the mix as a starter or reliever.

Freshman left hander Dylan Durate is a Texas native who had a 32-5 career record in high school, going 12-1 with 0.87 ERA his senior year. Tyler Adams and Tyler McMurray are big, tall right-handed sophomores who will also have a role. Cameron, Love, Rogers and Colton Freeman could also be called on to help.

Outlook

This team appears to be deep and versatile, both in the field and on the mound. Several players can play multiple positions and all pitchers can start or relieve.

After spending all of last season on the road the return to The Joe will be a huge lift to the team. The amenities of the stadium will be second to none, and the return of the Right Field Ragers Student Section will give a big energy boost to the players.

This is an important season for the team, and for Gaspard, as they christen the new stadium. The schedule offers plenty of challenges with out of conference games with Maryland, Notre Dame, Oregon, Houston and Southern Miss, among others, in addition to the tough SEC foes. The first series is the Maryland Terrapins on February 19th, 20th and 21st. The first game is at 6:30 p.m., Saturday is set for 3:30 p.m. and Sunday's game three has a noon first pitch.

Really hope he can have a strong year.

This is good news. I was thinking Henry would be at first but with Taylor there and Henry in the DH that really helps our lineup.

His bio says he is 5-8. Kinda short but if the kid can play

Looks like the strength of this team.
