Bob Jones young man making some noise.

Film Study: Can Alabama LB Reggie Ragland get anymore freakish?

quote:

This was one of the most athletic plays made in the entire country last season: Lined up as a hand-in-the-dirt 6-technique DE, Ragland performed a T/E exchange but pulled back once he encountered a double. He then proceeded to show off his amazing leaping ability — and timing — on the way to a fantastic interception.

quote:

Here we see Ragland lined back up at a 6-technique. He originally took an inside move but peeled back to reassess when he felt he wasn’t penetrating; he then displayed his high-motor in chasing down the quarterback on the way to forcing an intentional grounding penalty.

quote:

Ragland’s propensity for living in the other’s team backfield is none-more apparent than in the above sequence.

quote:

Ragland is also money in space, similar to former superstar safety Landon Collins, which lends itself to his positional versatility; he can literally excel at all three off-the-ball LB positions in an even-front alignment.

quote:

This particular play stood out for me as it matched Ragland up with college football’s premier tight end, Hunter Henry, in a battle of sheer athleticism. Henry had a pretty good jump on him, but Ragland showed some significant closing speed on his way to getting back into the play.

I read that earlier. Doesn't get much more glowing than that. If he really was that good last year, he should have a Cornelius Bennett type year this year with a year of experience under his belt and our stacked DL keeping blockers off him

At the level we recruit it is easy to forget about guys who are 2-3 yrs in the program and need time to learn the system.

Good for us that Reggie is started to play up to his hype last season.

Ragland is more athletic than I thought. I remember seeing his tape and thinking of Ro immediately. The guy definitely fits the mold of what a prototypical linebacker at Alabama looks like. To add to the fact that he's a beast, he's a great leader too. Him coming back was absolutely huge. In every single year Bama won the natty, there was a alpha leader linebacker who led the defense. This year, with A'Shawn and Reed back to open up the holes for him, Foster, and Lee, its going to be awesome to watch Alabama get back to the old physical defense that shut opponents down we saw from '08-'12.

The only thing stopping our front 7 from being far and away the best in the country this season will be themselves. I'm not sure there is a better collection of talent and experience anywhere else in the Power Five.

Agreed. We need our front 7 to be not only the best front 7 in college but the best unit regardless of position. No reason they shouldn't wreak havoc every game.

Another article from Jan. i found interesting.

quote:

“Sacks have nothing to do with winning, nothing at all,” Saban said in 2009. “There’s no stat in the NFL that says how many sacks you’re getting contributes to winning. It’s good to affect the quarterback. We affected the guy because he was throwing it so fast, we couldn’t sack him. To me, that’s affecting the quarterback, is it not? You can’t hold it to throw down the field. ?”It’s about affecting the quarterback. You don’t have to sack him to affect him.”

I thought a lot opposing QB's has to much time to
sit in the pocket last year thus making our secondary look worse than it was. I think we have to
get more pressure from the front seven this year.

Crunching the numbers: Alabama sacks

Team, Sacks (average), Record ?
Utah 55 (4.23) 9-4

Boise State 47 (3.36) 12-2
Michigan State 42 (3.23) 11-2
Louisville 41 (3.15) 9-4
Missouri 44 (3.14) 11-2

Ragland is a monster. Was he that dominant in high school?

He surely is! I must admit that I thought the kid was going to be a bust or get moved to TE, due to the lack of news we heard about him his first couple of years. Hopefully Foster steps up and they become a deadly combo.

We wouldn't have even made it into the twenties in sacks in 2013 had it not been for that last LSU possession where we zached Sack Mettenberger 3 times in a row (I think I might watch that YouTube video now :)
