Below is from another thread where I was talking to an OU fan:

Bama's problem isn't having guys that are too big and slow, it's the scheme Saban and Smart are using that's failing.

See if you have shitty dbs (or average/inexperienced ones), you need a great pass rush to keep a QB from exploiting the dbs. Kevin Steele likes to blitz a lot, Bama needs that. The last few years, we've only been rushing 4 on most plays and 5 every now and then. So QBs have all day to throw and exploit our struggling dbs.

We need to blitz, blitz, blitz because they say if you blitz too much you're vulnerable to the big play. Well we never fricking blitz and we're giving up tons of big plays to everyone we face.

Pisses me off. Blitz these fools, give up some big plays but you'll get more sacks and chances for turnovers.

You don't get turnovers playing 7 fricking deep.

But...why the lack of turnovers?

Well turnovers are often caused by guys blitzing and getting inside quickly and disrupting things. If you're relying on your DL to do that, you're asking too much of them.

More pressure (by bringing more guys on blitzes) on the QB would mean more chances at causing him to fumble or get hit while throwing and throw a pick.

Bama blitzes frequently, and people use to complain that it was the only way they could get pressure.

Foster and Ragland blitz a lot, as does a DB if not 2. Double safety blitz was a constant with Sunseri.

Bama got burnt on a corner blitz against Ole Miss in fact, Kelly hit Core for 30 on that side of the field.

Blitzes are rarely effective against spread teams, the offense is designed to get the ball quickly.

And 3 of the 4 teams Bama has played thus far are spread teams.

We must be watching two different teams because this defensive line has effected the QB in every game we've played. This secondary does not have bad DBs. The coverage is much better than years past. OM never established and substantial drive that ended in a touchdown. They ended up with FG. I think some of the expectations for this defense are unrealistic. The only issue I see are one an offensive coordinator who is Not committed to running the ball and/or and offensive line that doesn't have the ability to dominate the LOS. Also an apparent lack of discipline as far as ball security. Without five turnovers Bama beats OM by two scores.

Was 2011 Bama a great defense?

They only had 20 gained turnovers, through 4 games this season we have 7. 2011 played 13 games so that is about as equal as it can get without busting out a calculator.

We dont have a problem, we are just as good and built the same way we have been since Saban has got here.

The real difference is everyone else has closed that gap. From the Jimmy's and Joe's - the x's and o's and all the way down to facilities. Renovate stadiums, build facilities that drop jaws and spend tons on jetting all around to get players from anywhere.

A decade of dominance by the sec and all its teams has led to multiple years of multiple big time bowl payouts per year and tv contracts that have pumped money into all the members of the conference. They can afford to up contracts on good coaches to keep them around and get good coaches.

Recruiting has blown up and coverage of it has as well. Players are tuned in to programs and us fans into them. They watch depth charts and that is huge reason they pick the school of their choice.

Then the best of these players leave early and although we can see it coming and so can the coaches the recruits dont. So waiting a year and playing special teams is a much less desirable situation than starting for a team on the up swing.

We don't get pressure with 4 DLinemen consistently because Nick does not put our best pass rushers on the field in obvious throwing situations. How on God's green earth can you tell me on 2nd or 3rd and long that DJ Pettway is our best option as an edge rusher??? Why is he not inside to cause interior pressure so guys like Evans, Williams, etc. (guys that actually, you know, have burst) can go after the QB?

And he's so paranoid about the deep ball, on 3rd and medium we play off the receivers. When the offense only needs 6 or 7 yards and the DBs are already 7 or 8 yards off, or immediately give a cushion even if showing press, it's not a mystery why our 3rd down defense has been bad the past few seasons

bama blitzes, every third n long. of course its one of a few blitzes used for years now. blitzes that normally get picked up and allows our db's to get picked apart. everybody knows when we are gonna blitz. but to balance that out we generally use players that are a step to slow to get there.

Part of the reason we had crazy defenses is TOP by running. We started turning into a quick strike team leaving our defense out there a bit longer. It's not 1 thing in particular but a combo of things. The best NFL QBs get the ball out under 2 secs
