They did the same thing Quatar did with the air conditioning stadiums for the World Cup. They basically said "here is what our stadiums will look like" with a technology that literally didn't exist yet.
I don't think that's the case at all.

In which case? I know for a fact the rotating roof had not been cleared, tested or proven to work by engineers when the MBS plan was approved. That's directly from engineers on the project. They had good reason to think they could figure it out (which is how it was sold by HOK Architects to Blank), but this is the first of it's kind and the trial and error period has taken much longer than they initially planned. They had to basically redesign and scrap half the original rotating panels and write a $50M change order.

BuroHappold Engineering worked closely with architect HOK to develop a retractable roof concept that was not only unique but also provided views to a large 360 degree “halo” scoreboard to every spectator. The Mercedes-Benz Stadium’s retractable roof can open in 10 minutes or less by moving eight cantilevered “petals” to create an exciting pin-wheel appearance while opening. One of our primary means of achieving this comes through our design which utilizes ETFE cushions, a transparent, inflated lightweight material that exerts minimal weight on the long span cantilevered moving petals. When the petals slide open, the oval-shaped roof opening spans the length of the field past each end zone.
The complex geometry of the facades, framed with elegant lightweight steel, help to create an iconic exterior. The eastern facade of the building is rendered in a pioneering use of single skin ETFE, creating a “window to the city”, with views to downtown Atlanta. Also, the client is pursuing LEED Platinum certification as a primary goal, so delivering a stadium with the highest levels of sustainability was integral to the design.

I don't consider that to be new technology. Qatar was proposing air-conditioning clouds. That would be something completely new.

Ah, got ya. Haha yea, not quite that outlandish.
Greg Byrne needs to get a quote on a few of those clouds for the September games at BDS.

Yeah. Qatar could have revolutionized the way people think of outdoor events if they could produce that at a semi-reasonable price.
Many stadiums these days have retractable roofs. Looking at how they want the new stadium to look, I don't see why they are having so many problems. I'm not a structural engineer (I'm a CE), so I can't draw up the plans to make it work, but in my head, it doesn't seem like it should be causing this much trouble. I can't imagine that they had to come up with something brand new.

Would be played in Georgia Dome
Whats the size difference in the two as far as seating capacity?
I wonder if Mercedes is getting some money back for all of the delays in their advertising dollars. Maybe they should loan some engineers to the process to get things going.
