The start of the college football season is closer than one might think. Eastlake High School alumnus Josh Palet is certainly clued in on that. He leaves San Diego on Saturday, Aug. 1, to report to the University of Alabama.

Yes, that Alabama, as in the University of Alabama Crimson Tide, as in perennial BCS national championship contenders.

Palet will be immediately immersed in big-time college football culture. The Crimson Tide competes in the Southeastern Conference (SEC), considered one of the strongest among the NCAA Division I schools. The on-campus football stadium seats 101,821 fans.

“It’s the most shocking thing I could ever imagine because I’m a huge Alabama football fan,” Palet said.

Palet, who stands 6 feet, 6 inches tall, is hard to miss on either the football or baseball field — areas in which he excelled athletically while attending EHS.

A three-year letter-winner in baseball and football and one-year letter-winner in basketball, Palet won league titles in baseball in 2011 and 2012, a league title in basketball in 2010 and a league title in football in 2011.

Montana Murphy is out with an injury. Palet decided to play baseball after high school. Here is his Senior film from 2011:

At first I thought he was another MLB washout, thought it was weird both he and Cam Stewart came from the San Diego organization.

Alas...

To my untrained eye he looks decent/serviceable, or am I showing my QB ignorance? Not that I'm hoping for this at all but it would be justice if he had to start the NC game against OSU and he proceeded to destroy their defense.

Again, I pray Jalen leads us all the way, I just hate Urban and that would be the ultimate revenge.

Was it Prothro that started a game or two for us several years ago when we had several QBs go down? Memory fails me but seems it was a receiver. I'm old, be nice to me.

I think you jumped a decade.

David Palmer started a couple games for us back in the Stallings era when Jay Barker was hurt.

You're probably thinking of Brandon Avalos, who was a QB.

I warned you I was old.

Thanks, he was equally as fun to watch as Prothro.

Palmer was the best. I loved watching him play. It wouldn't have been fair for him to play QB on a team that ran the read option. He would have been a monster in today's game

Josh Palet is the real deal. It wouldn't surprise me if he wins the starting job since Jalen is inconsistent throwing the ball.
