Senior Maurice Smith, who was in the mix to be the Tide's starting nickel back, is leaving and will join another program as a graduate transfer, according to a source.

Damn that's a shocker. He was going to start for us.

Definitely didn't see that coming.

OTOH, we're down to 85.

Was he really going to be a starter?

Looks like Tony Brown will be there if he isn't suspended. Brown is a upgrade.

Sheesh, that's 2 quality safeties gone this summer. Not cool. Wonder if there some friction with the new DB coach? Gonna be thin at safety

It is going to be awesome when Jackson, Harrison, Humphrey, Fitzpatrick, Brown and Sheffield all are on the field together. Can anyone say "No Fly Zone"

The coaches must feel good about DThompson returning to the defense to let Smith go (I assume this was a mutual parting).

I've always liked Mo but honestly I think we'll be fine. I don't think he'd be transferring if he felt he was inline for a lot of minutes. I wish him luck.

Based on his high school reputation alone, maybe. Smith had seen far more meaningful playing time than Brown has, so the coaches clearly thought more of him.

This is a much bigger shocker than Burgess-Becker. I don't understand the sudden transfers.

Let us not forget that Brown started a few games at the second CB spot as a true frosh...

I probably should've expected him to, but I didn't, so I guess this one doesn't hit me as hard. Good luck to Mo.

This. He's just had some off the field issues, but Saban can get him through those.

He was going to leave after the Clemson game but decided to see how spring would go. Now that Anthony Averett likely going to be the corner next to Hump. That put's Fitz back at Nickel where Smith would play. Harrison had already beat Smith out at safety and Brown is the backup for Fitz and Harrison. Not to mention all the new kids. It wasn't looking good for Smith.

Makes sense. He put in his time and got his degree, you shouldn't ask for more than that from a player . Now he wants to go somewhere and be the top dog so thanks and good luck to him.

this still is head scratching. With the type of offenses we are seeing these days he was going to see plenty of PT. I can not think of a player under NS who has left this late in his career and was a world beater anywhere else. And please dont mention the RB at UT as he left early in his career. The only one I can think of is the RB who left and had a good senior year at CSU. I am having a senior moment and cant recall his name, but also do not think he made an NFL team. Some of you young bucks know if he made an NFL roster?
