"Way more upside". If that doesn't get you excited, then you're not a fan

was with that group and he also said this " if lane had his way we would start the young guy, he has way more upside". He caught himself and changed the subject. Was quite telling.

That 'what more up side' comment more than anything else is what tells me it will be Hurts.

I don't know what to make of this source, but this Touchdown Alabama Magazine is running a story saying Hurts will be named the starter. Seems like a move to get clicks but just figured someone will post it here eventually.

Probably shouldn't have devoted a whole thread to it, but I started one for it. Super tired and just did it.

No worries, looks like you beat me by a couple minutes anyway. Had actually been trying to post it for a few minutes, but having some trouble with the site right now, getting error messages. Anyway, I want it to be true but seems like a peripheral outlet swinging for the fences for clicks.

I'm just trying to will it into reality. I feel like the more we talk about it, the better chance it happens

3rd and 8 becomes a different animal with Hurts out there. Roll him out and get him on the edge and the defense has more problems than you can shake a stick at. That's the dimension he brings: you can't sit on ANYTHING!!

I'm pumped about Hurts, but a lot of people are acting like we have never had a mobile dude in the offense. Uhhh, Blake Sims? He did bring a different dimension and it helped a lot...he also had a killer season. How would Hurts be much different than Sims was?

Blake was more of a emergency scrambler and was good at picking up first downs when a play broke down. Other than a few (most notably against A&M) designed runs, he was still mostly a pocket QB. I know it sounds crazy saying that about a former running back but I just see Hurts as a more Deshaun Watson read option type. Of course, that's hyperbole to compare the two at this point but it's just my two cents.
ETA: My memory may be bad on the amount of designed runs we did with Blake but I'm pretty sure we didn't do too many considering his running ability.

Hurts is an actual QB. Sims was a running back playing QB. Sims had a great year, but he was bailed out a lot of times by Amari Cooper. i don't mean to diminish the year that Sims had, but a lot of times it was just one read and run. Everyone has said that Hurts goes through all of his progressions before he takes off.

We tried the read option against Missouri in the championship game, and the ball was on the ground a lot

Reuben Foster's uncle posted this on BOL

Don't know about the starting rumor going on now, but I wouldn't doubt it. Been hearing great things about him for awhile. I just don't say anything until final word. From a convo I had with one of the players. They said he is a bad man and fast as hell. If a play breaks down he is running and NOBODY can catch him. TIFWIW.

Guys, this has got to stop. I've just about fapped myself to dehydration.

Hurts is getting this kind of praise when he hasn't been out of HS for even a year yet, and competing against one of, if not the, top defenses in football. This shouldn't happen.

I tried to ground myself, but frick it, we're Gumping our way to 17.

I have not heard this info to be factual. Granted, I have heard about his arm talent and leg talent, his cool demeanor, and his supposed astuteness picking things up for a freshman. However, I have never heard any reputable source indicate that he's ready to read SEC defenses play in and play out.

So Barnett is? Ha!

Bateman wouldn't threaten any defense with his checkdowns and fear of running.

Hurts is our best hope. You might as well get on the wagon.

I never said anything about how he reads defenses.

with his checkdowns

I love checkdowns. They're fantastic. Why? If a 5-yard run is great, so is a 5-yard pass. Keep the chains moving.

fear of running

I would have loved for Bateman to have kept the rock on 2 or 3 zone-reads early against Ole Miss. Hell, he might still be running. But it's ridiculous to use those few data points to peg him as "afraid of running." Players develop and improve over time. It's not Hurts 2016 versus Bateman 2015. It's Hurts 2016 versus Bateman 2016, and there's no reason to assume Bateman hasn't improved along with the rest of our roster.

I fundamentally disagree that Hurts is definitively our "best hope" right now. My opinion is play the guy who gives us the best chance to win. And I can make an argument that Bateman does just that by essentially being a more fleet-footed Greg McElroy. With the playmakers we have at the skill positions, Bateman's playbook knowledge and ability to audible can make us really, really multiple, and the knock on his long ball as this deal-breaker is asinine. Bateman can make 90% of the throws as good as anyone else, and many have said he's the most accurate we've got with the short to intermediate stuff.

Simply put, I think a lot of you have some blinders on regarding Bateman's positives given that historically, Bama fans clamor for the backup/young guy, and this young guy is the most exciting we've had there in a while. Couple that with your angst about the Ole Miss game, and here we are.

If I was putting together a 7on7 squad, Hurts all day. But a steady game manager might be my choice given the talent around the QB at Bama right now. Bateman might be better able to utilize the talent we have, and we might be pretty damn predictable with Hurts. And I don't like predictable.

However, if the staff thinks Hurts gives us the best chance to win, then play the kid. And I support that 100%. But I don't support illogical fandom and circle-jerks for the freshman QB. The lights are big at Bama. Let's slow the hype roll just a tad.

So, the quoted statement is not you supporting Hurts' ability to read a defense in the passing game? Really? That looks like exactly what you're implying.

Bama will live and die by the play of the OL and the run game. If the running game is not working it doesn't matter who the QB is.

I'm not implying anything. I said he goes through his progressions. He looks to his primary, then secondary and so on.
