I really believe that if we punch it in for a TD on that opening drive or when we had it down at the inch line, the floodgates would've been opened. To Malzahn's credit, he was doing what he could to muck up the game and manage Johnson. Like most games, he had a good script to start the game. If we get up by a TD or two early, it would've forced AU to get more aggressive and take more risks. The same could be said for the 3rd and 12 tipped pass. If we swat that down, they're punting and all of the mojo is on our side.

It really is crazy how we just couldn't grab any kind of momentum in the first half. Just like the Miss State game, all it takes is giving our defense a good lead and the game is over. Going forward, we have to do better about taking advantage of those opportunities early in a game. Our offense is designed to grind opponents down and we average 2-3 TDs a game. We can't afford to waste our opportunities in the redzone...especially against teams like Oklahoma or Clemson.

That 1 inch line play was frustrating. I can understand wanting to get Henry started and trusting him, but I feel like a QB sneak for 1 inch would've opened the game up immensely like you said.

I was screaming for a QB sneak but its hard to blame Kiffin for giving the ball to the Heisman frontrunner in order to get an inch. Who would've thought it would end with an 8 yard loss?

The more frustrating playcall was the WR screen when it was 2nd and 4 on the opening drive.

He could have called a sneak there, but if the O-Line gets blown up like they did even that won't get it done. I think it was Pierschbacher that lost leverage and got pushed into the backfield on that play.

Wasn't frustrated with the play call, just where they ran it to. I would have ran it to the left, opposite of Carl Lawson, he blew up the play. Also, we should have run the A'Shawn package.

Right call, wrong formation. They should used our "jumbo" package with A'shawn.

I was screaming at the TV asking the same thing.

I was screaming for the A'Shawn package as well. Don't think it has been stopped yet in goal line, why stop using it? For every brilliant play call, Kiffin farts out a terrible one like that. Bring in your beef, go under center and pound it three times.

Seemed like a no brainer to me.

I was hoping that A.Robinson would line up as lead blocker for Henry on the goal line play. I think if he had, Henry may have scored...or at least not have lost that much yardage.

It was a hurry up play to build momentum and keep the D from getting reset.

If we put in Jumbo they have a chance to substitute as well. It didn't work but I understand the mind set.

Honestly, how can anyone be mad at Kiffin for running with Henry on the 1 yard line?

You can't be upset with the call just the execution.

Wasn't that goal line run Henry's only rush for a loss in the entire game?

No, he had a couple of slips that were yard losses. I think it was three, but they all were from slipping.

I understand the theoretical advantage in this tactic. In practice however, it seems like every time we do it on the goal line, we shoot ourselves in the foot:
-illegal formation
-false start
-missed assigments
etc

We should scrap the hurry up on the goal line. Get our best people/plays/packages in, make sure we're all on the same page, execute, score.

Especially considering how that QB sneak at the 1-yard line was our bread and butter in 2008. I think John Parker Wilson scored something like 5 rushing TDs.

Also considering that Coker is a perfect QB sneak QB.

i wonder how the first half would have played out had henry been able to make cuts without slipping? Any of those plays result in positive yards?

I thought I heard somewhere, that Henry only had one negative yardage play on his 47 touches.

I've heard the same. I suppose that was the goal line situation in which he slipped. If he had traction he would have gained a TD OR at least back to line of scrimmage. IMO Anyways.

I saw this on RollTide.com: GRIFFITH'S FIVE FIELD GOALS: Adam Griffith's five field goals made is the second-most in a single game by an Alabama kicker, tied with Leigh Tiffin at Ole Miss (Oct. 10, 2009) and Jeremy Shelley against LSU (Jan. 9, 2012). It sets the record for the most field goals in a game against Auburn, passing the four Van Tiffin collected in the 1985 Iron Bowl.

Good for Griffith.
