Looking back at Texas's pursuit of Saban

Before the call, Tom Hicks told Hall that Sexton might just be playing Texas to squeeze more money out of Alabama. Hall replied that he doubted that was the case; he pointed out that his friend was friends with Sexton, and he said Sexton wouldn’t want to antagonize him. “I had called my friend,” Hall says, “and asked him if he thought he was being played. He said, ‘No.’ ”
Hall and Tom Hicks talked to Sexton for 45 minutes. They say that Sexton told them that Saban felt “special pressure” and a lack of appreciation at Alabama. “Sexton said that the day after the championship, Alabama boosters were pounding the table, talking about a three-peat,” Hall says.
Sexton also told the men that Saban felt as if he was more of a turnaround artist than a long-term C.E.O., and that it was easier and more fun to rebuild a program than it was to keep one at the top. Saban’s wife, Terry, liked warm weather, so they wanted to stay in the South. Saban also loved lakes, something the Austin area has in abundance. Sexton floated the idea that Saban could take the Texas job, his last; bring the football program back to national prominence; and then retire.

I can see how rebuilding could be more fun than sustaining. Its his life, if thats something he wanted to consider so be it. Im glad things worked in our favor though. RTR

The sources for this story came mostly from the Texas side. Texas fans (and boosters) are a lot like us. They believe that you can get anyone if you throw enough money at him. Kind of like us with Gregg Marshall
I'd be interested to hear the Alabama side of this story.

If any of you are big time boosters of Alabama or any college team, I can legitimately call you a lowlife piece of shite.

Good God. The man probably hates coming to work every day. I hope this causes some self reflection from some of us...

I'm talking in the tens of thousands. Like big time sums.

My father and grandfather do as much, and I can assure you that they are not low-life pieces of shite. Whatever floats your boat, though, man.

Nobody is a piece of shite. But we do need to lay off the pressure a tad. We're not going to win the title every year. If we run this man off, we're right back where we were prior to hiring him.
He deserves better appreciation from us.

BlackPawnMartyr, I get that. He wants to win every game we play. But I doubt he wants to feel unnecessary wrath when we don't.

Sorry, I don't feel as bad for the Sabans as some of you do. We pay him millions of dollars to put up with the pressure. We built a statue of him after 3 years. He's appreciated. If the man doesn't want pressure, then he needs to pick another profession and I can assure you that coaching at Texas wouldn't exactly be a spa-day for the Sabans either. God forbid people talk about 3-peating after winning 2 straight titles. That would happen anywhere.
Saban is one of the GOAT and I thank God that he's at Alabama. I 100% respect the message he preaches and don't think he gets the credit he deserves from a lot of the media. Too many people are out to tear down what he has to say. However, if he had left for Texas after all of his denials of leaving and on the heels of the Kick 6, then I would've lost all respect for him.

My thoughts exactly FairhopeTider. I love having CNS as a coach but I don't have any sympathy for the amount of pressure he's under. Comes with the job. And let's remember, this is all allegedly coming from his agent feeling out a possible offer from the richest program in the country, so who knows how CNS really feels. He seems like the kind of guy to me that doesn't really GAF what the fans, boosters, or media think, and any pressure to win comes from within.
If he's tired of something, my guess is that it's complacency not pressure. You can feed off pressure; use it for motivation. Complacency has the opposite effect.

I don't feel sorry for him, at all.
I do, however, think that its understandable for him to be annoyed with having to put up with unreasonable boosters. I see it first hand all the time, our fanbase is ridiculous sometimes with expectations. That could get real old, real quick, especially when you are already kicking arse at your job.

I don't feel for him but I can understand his frustration that he probably can't enjoy a meal or go out with his family without someone trying to get a photo. Again, that's why we're him paying a salary with a lot of decimal points.
It really takes someone like Saban to win at UA. If they don't have the stomach to deal with all of the BS, then they'll fail. I don't think every coach is equipped to deal with life in the fish bowl. That said, Saban put a lot of people in their place when he arrived. He had the political capital to do that. Boosters who could always get on sidelines, practice, etc. were quickly told to sit down. My fear is that when Saban leaves, a lot of those types will try to get their fingers back in the program and we could have a new coach who'd care more about being liked instead of putting his foot down.

That's my biggest fear. Boosters running Nick off after a down year just to get another clueless puppet they can control.
