By all accounts, they should be the strength of the team. Not sure if i've ever seen a Bama team so deep on the DL. Curry/Copeland bookends comes to mind and Moorehaed/Johnson/Odom in '02 were stacked. This group could be as good as any of them.

One of the best attributes of this group is that they can come out with several different combinations.

My top 5:

Robinson
Reed
Allen
Pettway
Tomlinson

but D.Hand probably has the most potential. All of these guys have been in the system for at least a year. D.Lake and J.Frazier should get some PT at NT. I could see Saban/Smart using a 4 man front a lot, even against a spread team like auburn.

Thoughts?

I don't know what to say that I haven't already said for months now. This feels like the off season before the 2012 OL except even bigger because we're not just talking about the starters, this DL is incredibly deep and experienced. Then you put some of these OLBs next to em and a guy like Reggie Ragland behind em? With a good bit of experience on the back end?

I think this defense is going to make people fear playing Bama again. Unless we still meltdown when things don't go according to plan for a quarter and let the rest of the game get out of hand.

I'd like to see an increase to the 31 team sacks last year. Utah had the high water mark in 2014 with 55. I don't need or expect that much, but somewhere in the mid to high 40s would be ideal. The line has talent on top of talent. There should be no excuses this year (barring injury of course). I expect an elite unit, anything less will be severely disappointing.

I think mid to high 40s would be little to much to except. The defense doesn't have to have a bunch of sacks to be good so long as they get the opposing offense off the field faster. I think 35-40 sacks is more ideal.

You're right mid to high 40s is probably too high to expect, but frick it, I expect it anyway. I understand in the grand scheme of defensive things sacks aren't all that important, but they are something our Ds seem to have been missing the past couple of seasons. We all want our defense to get the opposing team off the field faster, I think dropping the QB repeatedly behind the LOS will help achieve that goal. We have all this supposed talent out there on the line. I want to see them do more than just maintain their gaps and catch running backs. I want to see a guy like Hand blow up with 10-15 sacks. I want to see A'Shawn return to that first year were he racked up 6.5 or so. I want opposing quarterbacks to look across from his center and shite his pants. I want that internal clock in their head to tick a couple milliseconds faster, because just maybe if they hold on to the ball too long, Allen will break them in half. We generate more pass rush this year by our line and our secondary will look so much better. The NYG won two Super Bowls with overall average defenses but absolutely elite pass rushes. In my opinion it's the most important part of a defensive unit and I want to see us get better at it.

Sorry for the rant and no paragraphs

Would really like Reed to explode and become a complete force up the middle. He was a beast last year at plugging up the middle, along with A'Shawn, but Id like for him to collapse the pocket up the middle and force the QB to make his decisions faster and have to run outside the pocket to throw. Sad thing is, offenses nowadays do theses quick throws to the sidelines and quick plays, it gets harder for dlineman to be able to attack the middle when in the back if their head, they have to worry about the RB swinging outside.

I'm hoping Evans and Hand really explode this year and can cause havoc on the edge.

I think another advantage our DL will have this year is that the teams to beat(LSU, Ark, UGA, MSU, and Wisc) will be run heavy teams. Which will play into our strengths. MSU may cause the most problems with some throwing and their mobile QB but not really that concerned.

Definitely have the talent/potential to be a great one...yet I still have flashbacks to the Ohio State game and how they pretty much handled us at the line of scrimmage, especially after the first quarter...but that could've had more to do with our scheme...

I think QB's like Dak play into our strength too. Looking at him, other than the Ole Miss game, I thought Alabama did the best at containing him. Reminds me a lot of Tebow. Has a respectable arm, but if you get him uncomfortable in the pocket and take away his running ability, you're going to beat him. Running up the middle with a big QB doesn't work on 'Bama. Cam, Tebow, and Dak all had problems. QB's that are elusive, quick, and have speed to break outside are what I think causes the most trouble for 'Bama. Reason why, you not only have to account for his speed to break outside, but say what Auburn has that is really tough, a power nimble Rb that can go up the middle, then the passing game. The way to fix this entire thing is to have someone on the d-line who can get off the line quick and take out that RB completely out of the game and make it way more one dimensional.

Our talent and depth favor a 4-3 defense this year. I hope the guys can impact the game in more ways than just eating blockers.

I agree and I think we'll see a lot of 4-3 next season. Robinson and Reed can do a whole lot more than just eat blockers.

The great thing about this d-line too is I think we can cover the short game fairly well, our biggest question mark will be over the top with the new safeties. If this DL can just get there routinely fast enough to disrupt deep balls, it will be a major help.

I'm anxious to see what our nickel and dime package defensive line looks like since that's what we'll be in the most. If Tim Williams can keep his head out of his arse I think he's a lock this year to be on one edge in nickel. I'd like to see Hand take over at the other edge but at this point he is not a better option than Jon Allen.

The pipe dream of having two "rabbit rushers" on the edge consistently should probably be let go. Don't expect to see Williams, Miller, Evans flying off the edges together very often. We value size too much for that

Base:
Robinson
Reed
Allen

Nickel:
Allen
Robinson
Reed/Tomlinson
Williams

Dime:
Hand
Allen
Tomlinson
Williams

My crack at how we look in the opener

He's an OLB in name only. He'll play with his hand in the dirt or rush from a 2 point stance. He doesn't provide much benefit in coverage and isn't built to stop the run, he's an edge rusher, but has the potential to be a really good one
