Alabama offensive tackle Cam Robinson could face a severe penalty, including imprisonment for at least a year, after he was arrested early Tuesday morning for felony possession of a stolen firearm. One lawyer believes a potential felony charge isn’t a foregone conclusion.

Cameron Murray, a criminal defense attorney from Monroe, La., told the Decatur Daily’s Alex Byington that an argument could be made to get the charges against Robinson and safety Laurence Jones diminished, or dropped entirely.

“The district attorney’s office here is very good about trying to keep somebody from having a felony on their record, so it’s imminently possible this could be worked out to either a misdemeanor or possibly a dismissal depending on the circumstances of each case,” Murray said.

Byington reported that a felony possession of a stolen firearm can prompt a sentencing of between one and five years for a first offense.

Robinson and Jones were arrested early Tuesday morning in Louisiana after a police officer noticed an odor of marijuana coming from the car the two Crimson Tide teammates were sitting in. The officer also noticed a handgun in Jones’ lap, a bag of marijuana on the driver’s side floor and the stolen handgun out of Baldwin County, Ala., under Robinson’s seat. Both players posted bond and were released Tuesday afternoon.

“We all have a responsibility and an obligation to represent the university, ourselves and our families in a first class way,” coach Nick Saban said Tuesday. “Obviously we’re a little disappointed that better choices and decisions weren’t made here. But, until we get the facts, we don’t really have much else to say about it.”

I have zero doubt it will be reduced.

He's 20 year old. It's his first offense of any kind. He's probably going to get youthful offender and deferred prosecution.

In AL that is par the for the course on most drug almost all property crimes. Even for adults, the deferred prosecution is the direction the states are taking. Keeps people out of prison to lower populations and if you are deferred, you are paying fees. The states love it.

He'd have been kicked of the team already if he wasn't Cam Robinson. That shouldn't change anything. We deserve to take a beating if he stays on the team.
