Is the 2008 recruiting class the best in school history?

Just watching some old YouTube videos and the number of guys that were contributing significantly to the 2009 title - just as sophomores - was staggering.
Julio Jones
Mark Barron
Courtney Upshaw
Mark Ingram
Marcel Dareus
Barrett Jones
Donta Hightower
Terrence Cody
Damion Square
Michael Williams
Robert Lester
I believe all those guys made it to the league (Brad Smelley maybe did too - for a brief bit), and most of them are still solidly on rosters.
There obviously were some misses, but that is a whole bunch of major hits. That was a hyped class coming in and you'd have to say it lived up to the hype.

Yes - for so many reasons
(1) The talent and depth of the class, both at the college level and the NFL level
(2) Those guys were the first great class at Alabama under Saban and set the tone for the entire era. They chose Alabama when choosing Alabama wasn't cool or easy.
(3) Those guys were the first group to become dominant as players at Alabama
All in all, that group brought Alabama football back.

I'll say yes as well. That class brought Alabama back to an elite level and were the driving force in the 09 title and even to some degree in the 11 and 12 titles.
We've had some incredible classes since, but none on that level. Some say the 17 class will be on that level, we shall see.

2013 comes pretty damn close.
Derrick Henry
Reuben Foster
OJ Howard
A'Shawn Robinson
Jon Allen
Tim Williams
Eddie Jackson
Anthony Averrit
ArDarius Stewart
Bradley Bozeman
Cole Motherfricking Mazza.
That doesn't even count Robert Foster, who still has a chance to contribute and Alvin Kamara who was a very good player elsewhere.

08 absolutely trumps it in accomplishments. It was also the first big one so it will always be special for that.
2013 for me just comes the closest in terms of great players signed.

'08 set the foundation for future success, but '09 was full of great ones too:
AJ McCarron
DJ Fluker
James Carpenter
Dre Kirkpatrick
Nico Johnson
Eddie Lacy
Kevin Norwood
James Carpenter
Ed Stinson
Kenny Bell
Chance Warman
Anthony Steen
Quinton Dial
Then throw in Kelly Johnson who was the FB in'12.

Summer of George provided a great list as to why the answer is yes, but I'll add this - that class had FIVE first rounders and 13 players who spent extended time on NFL rosters (some still there). That's insane.

That is unreal.
Also - I do want to add - my analysis is only post-Bryant. I don't know nearly enough about all the individual players and classes of that era to compare.

The '58, '80, and '91 classes were the standard before Saban arrived.

It's also hard to compare pre-scholarship restriction classes to modern classes, not to mention the 25-man limit classes of the even more modern era.

Same. I'm in my 30's. If it happened before circa 1988 I have no personal memory of it b/c I was too young and not living in America.
