If you can only be elite at one defensive position which one would you choose?

Under Saban we have been elite at every position on defense multiple years imo but I was thinking that over the next two years following this season we might go from elite to good on the DL. We have a chance to be elite in the secondary and will definitely be elite at LB. I think if I could choose one position I would give up a couple of elite linebackers and add elite dlinemen in their place. Just a random thought and I started to post this on the rant but I am not in the mood for a pissing match with other fans today.

You can't have a serious conversation over there.

I'd choose DL. It all starts up front. And elite DL can make average linebackers and secondaries look great

True. It's a shame too. A shite ton of posters from multiple schools but very few mature adults looking for serious discussion about SEC sports. I hope it isn't as bad during football season but I haven't been here long enough to find out.

I agree with you btw on the dline. We have had a couple of very good lines under Saban that didn't have a Jonathan Allen on it so maybe we end up better than I think it will be in 18 and 19. I guess it was just rare to have an Allen and a Payne on the same line.

Give me the defensive line. Specifically I'd say defensive end because against spread teams setting the edge and rushing the passer is vital.

The only argument I'd make against the d line is that they can't call audibles easily like a linebacker or safety can.

You will quickly find out that it is much worse during football season. When I first joined this site in 2009 the Rant was more mature than it is now. Then the Cam Newton scandal broke in November 2010 and the site hasn't been the same since.

To answer your question, I'd prefer to be a DB. That was my position in middle school and high school. So I'm naturally biased towards it.

If you want a serious conversation, you have to post your topic and then just ignore the trolls. You'll get some serious responses. It's best just to treat the trolls like they don't exist

With the personnel we have returning in the secondary I believe Bama will be elite there. Regarding the LBs, Evans is a known quantity, but we have to hope SDH returns at 100 percent and one or two more relative newcomers step up for us to be elite at LB.

To answer your question, DL is where it starts.

Defensive line. You can stop the run and pass with a super elite d-line

Championships are won when you have good linemen on both sides of the ball. For all the focus on skill positions, football is, has always been, will always be won at the line of scrimmage.

While maturity isn't a word that comes to mind when I think of what it was like when I joined in 2008, I agree it's gone downhill. And the reason is there are more millenials aka snowflakes on the Rant. Just imagine how it'll be in another 20 years when they are running the country.

Defensive line.

Looking at it as what single position, not position group ...

I'd say an elite strong safety with a nose for the football, excellent ball skills, a bone crushing tackler who plays the pass as well as the run, superb on field leadership, and the ability to see the offense and help run the defense is key IMO ... they are playmakers.

I could easily have gone Mike LB for many of the same reasons. I just tend to favor the safety position. Bigger hits and more pick 6s.

While I agree, an elite DL unit is most valuable on D, a single elite DL man can be schemed around to minimize his impact. Plus, even the best can't be impact players every play given the speed of the game. Quality depth for a rotation is more important upfront on D than a single elite playmaker.

A great DL can hide a lot of weaknesses.
