Do we believe our interior D has the depth necessary to make a serious run? I mean I've been seeing Dakota Ball getting serious minutes. That can't be good right?
Either way though. Love this team.

Dakota Ball is playing well. Gentry got serious minutes on the 2011 defense, and that team turned out pretty well.

Yes, there is enough depth. Not as much as last year, but still good depth. Davis is starting to get more and more work, too, which I think bodes well.
I'm also not sure how Ball playing in a reserve role is an indicator of bad things? I guess because he's white and was only three stars, so he must not be any good?

I think passes over 15 yards is the weakness yet again.

Of course it does.

What, because he was a 3 star?

He just doesn't seem to make many plays and looks like we didn't have any other options for a backup. But I'd love to wrong about him.

Yeah Ball doesn't pass the eye test. But he has some positives. High motor. He doesn't do anything stupid. He is where he is supposed to be. Etc.

The weakness is R. Harrison coverage and E. Jacksons unwillingness to tackle guys coming over the middle.

He is kind of like a Denzel Duvall , good position player but won't wow you.

Our depth on defense period is a bit concerning. Our starters are as good as any out there and we have a lot of young talent that needs a year to simmer--guys like Ben Davis, Mac Wilson, Hall, Shy Carter, and R. Davis--but there's a gap that our sophomore and junior classes should be filling but it's just not there for some reason it seems.
If this defense can stay healthy, we can be elite. If we start getting dinged it could get tough. We saw what our defense looked like late against OM when 3 starters got dinged and it wasn't pretty.

Humphrey
Fitzpatrick
Harrison
Averett
Hamilton
Hand
Ball
Evans
Payne
Miller
Jennings
Frazier
All sophomores or juniors playing fairly significant roles on defense.
I saw the Ole Miss issues as largely a result of deciding to play soft once up by 18.

I wasn't talking about our starters, I was talking about the backup roles that would normally be filled by those classes. I believe Ball is a senior, and the truth is guys like Frazier, Miller, etc are just ok. Mediocre in terms of production and impact plays. They aren't coming off the bench and killing people like our backups were last year. Heck, last year our back ups in the front 7 came in and outplayed the starters half the time. This year, our back ups are either players who haven't become great yet for whatever reason, or true freshmen who just aren't ready yet. That is a massive difference between the D last year and this year and is a concern.
I'm hoping Tony Brown will provide some much needed depth on the backend that will allow guys that aren't ready yet like Shy Carter more time to develop and learn the scheme. Heck, if Harrison doesn't get his mind right we may need Tony to take over that spot.
I'm not disappointed in this defense, but I have been disappointed in the play of the 2s the very little Saban has allowed them to play in critical situations...which says something in and of itself.

Think about this, this is likely our 2nd defense right now...ask yourself how many of those guys are proven monsters who you'd have confidence in going against a high powered TAMU or Vol offense:
DE- Ball
NG- Frazier
DE- Hand (who has been a ghost this year on the field)
OLB-Jennings
ILB-Holcombe
ILB-Evans (also a ghost this year)
OLB-Miller (still too light to play on 1st and 2nd down)
CB-Tony Brown
CB- Aaron Robinson(or the walk on)
star- shy carter
Safety-Hootie
Safety-Thompson
Now if you get the warm and fuzzies looking at our second defense...good for you I guess, but I don't.

Well thankfully we won't have all those guys out there at the same time. They just need to provide depth. Teams like ATM and Tennessee are gonna score points on us. They have a lot five star guys and it's just the way the game is played these days.
I'm much more concerned with how our offensive coaches will manage our freshman qb vs their all American pass rushers.

I have confidence in all of them to step in and play a role. Do I want them to be the starting defense? No, but that's not what they're being asked to do. I'm really confused by this conversation. When is a second team defense ever full of "proven monsters"? It's not. Ever.

Our second team d last year, or at least the front 7, was insanely good.

Front 7 depth was amazing last year, at least the d-line for sure.
I'd be more concerned with our starting OL than anything to with the defense at this point.
And yes the team is good enough and will make a run at it. Now if we succeed in that run I am not sure, but we certainly have the talent to, just need players to step up and improve week by week.
do you think we were good enough in week 4 to be national champions? I certainly didn't, just gotta improve and take it one week / one day at a time.

That's true, last year I wasn't thinking natty at this point. But I think our Oline is going to be nasty this year eventually but the Defense I'm seeing right now lacks quality depth tremendously. Mack Wilson and Ben Davis will wreck shite one day but we need someone eating up the run once our starters are tired. And Rueben Foster better stay healthy or we are in trouble. Just some concerns though, Roll Tide.

I'd never argue that this defense is as deep as last year's, especially up front. But I think when things have past we remember different than the reality. Through four games last season, some of the guys we think of as being beastly at the end of the year had really not established themselves.
