Hurts vs Tua

So glad we have Tua coming in next year. He'll be pushing Hurts for the starting job and he'll either make Hurts better, or he'll take the job. This year Hurts didn't have anyone pushing him for the job after Barnett left.

Give it up bro! Hurts is the QB for a while, unless a serious injury happens. Just hope for his development to continue.

I'm fine with Hurts. Never said I wasn't. Just saying I think he would be better in the passing game if he had someone else to compete with. It's a one man position right now. Next year Tua will add competition. I do think Hurts will start every year he's here, and I hope he does bc I like him and he's a good person off the field, but Tua will fight him for the spot and it'll make them both better.

This is fricking stupid dude. Go to bed.

How is that stupid? He has 0 competition from the other QBs.

Tua is a Deshaun Watson type
Jalen isn't a passer
Jalen isn't a passer

It isn't stupid bro. I have quickly noticed that anything questioning Hurts at all is enough to bring out ignorant folks who see something that clearly isn't there. Hurts isn't the answer. He was just the only option because we didn't sign a capable quarterback for a couple of years and because Barnett freezes up at the sign of pressure.

Look, the reality is that right now Hurts is a bad passing QB. Whether he needs someone else pushing him, or if he needs to get himself to a camp like the Mastrole Passing Academy in the summer...like Blake Sims did, or a new OC, or whatever, he needs to get A LOT better. That's reality. Right now, he isn't even mediocre. He hasn't improved. And yeah, we may win the NC anyway, but going forward we absolutely have to get better passing.

Yep. He is a terrible passer. We are fortunate to have the goat defense and a 5 star backfield. Sadly it will take more than just a little improvement to just be average. This is the game where he may need to win with his arm. If we can't run the ball then it's over. Last year Clemson stuffed our run outside of that one huge touchdown from Henry.

To continue it must begin.

We have a 5 star WR corps that has basically become non-existent downfield.

The problem with your assessment is that you at least partly believe he is struggling because he isn't trying hard enough. I just don't buy that. He's hit the wall probably mentally and physically, teams know how to attack him, and competition has improved. All those things equal what is perceived as regression. I still expect major improvement before next season based on nothing more than being able to study a seasons worth of successes and failures.
I firmly believe his issues are 95 percent mental in terms of reading the defense and making progressions. Guys are open. He's just not able to locate them. His arm is fine.
Additionally, expecting Tua to come in and be even half as effective as Hurts right away might be setting yourself up for disappointment. There is going to be a HUGE learning curve, plus major social adjustments, for him coming from Hawaii.

Hurts won't improve as a passer until he gets a full offseason in where he can work with a QB coach, participate in skeleton drills, etc. His problems aren't going to be fixed in one Bowl practice.
Which is why the playcalling is absolutely baffling to me. The way we refuse to lean on our running game is almost self-destructive.

Agreed. Hurts passing wasn't erratic yesterday. He just couldn't pull the trigger or didn't read the defense correctly. On a couple of occasions where we had good throws, we had drops and penalties. Still, he's just not processing the info in front of him quickly enough to make plays against good teams. He's going to have even less time against Clemson.
For instance, on the first play of the game, he tried to hit Howard on a corner/deep out. He didn't see the RB defender fading toward OJ, leaving the back with nobody near him. A check to the RB there ends up as a 15-yard play. He was very lucky it wasn't picked. But he wasn't able to process that quickly enough.
Kiffin probably needs to bust out the Coker plan of feeding the RBs and taking shots over the top to keep the safeties lose. Those are throws that should be able to be identified pre snap in a lot of instances. The problem is I expect Clemson to play a lot of zone, which means those chances won't be there as much.
The offense as a whole just didn't click either. Stewart cut inside on one play we had blocked beautifully and ended up stalling a drive. Penalties stalled drives or put us behind the chains. And two of those delays I put on Lane for getting his audible in too late.

Looks, Hurts struggles as a passer right now. Let's not forget he's a true Freshman, despite the fact we're at the end of the season.
He's played well. Well enough to get us back to the big dance. Most of the time, he's poised. He's a leader that the team is behind.
Tua is a good talent. He's not coming in and taking snaps from Jalen. You just don't take a QB who started 14 (pretty much 15) games and possibly won you a title and pull him. That experience is going to be important and he should improve. Don't forget that Sark is good at coaching up QBs.
He may never be Tom Brady passing the ball, and we don't need him to be. As long as he develops as a passer, which I think he will, then he'll be fine.
But he isn't losing his job. That's silly. The only competition will be the kind that is always there. Like when Brady says he's always practicing like the guy behind him is going to take his job if he messes up. Saban may even say "Tua will have a chance to play", and "insiders" may report that he's pushing Jalen, and people will soak it up.
But Jalen isn't losing his job when all he's done is win and play at a level most TF QBs don't touch.

Saban has proven, with Hurts being one example, that a true freshman will play if he's good enough, regardless of position. It's a pretty good bet that Saban has advised Tua just that. It's also pretty evident that Saban has decided to go with a dual threat type QB that can run AND pass. If Tua comes in and is proficient running the ball and is a better passing QB, then he might get his chance. I'm pretty sure there were times this year that, had Barnett stayed, he would have come in relief of Hurts.

Tua is going to have to take a quantum leap to come in and even see the field. He's been playing high school competition in Hawaii, for goodness sakes! And he's going to immediately adjust to facing Alabama's first team defense in practice every day? I think not. Hurts at least had the advantage of facing high level Texas high school foes. Tua will redshirt, I'll almost guarantee. I think Mack Jones from Bolles is the backup next year just so we can redshirt Tua. Tua has the better upside but no sense giving him garbage snaps and wasting a year of eligibility when he's not ready. Hurts has the job for the foreseeable future.
