smh at the huge percentage of Bama fans that are shutting down legitimate criticism of Hurts due to an infatuation with the idea of "OH MY GAWWWWD TRUE FRESHMAN?!!??!!" Freshmen have been playing QB at major colleges for three decades now fellas.

I did a pretty detailed statistic analysis of true freshman QBs the last 20 years and the only one with a better overall season was Terrell Pryor. That doesn't mean anything going forward, but don't act like true freshman just trot out and dominate throwing the ball. It doesn't happen, even in super QB friendly systems.

Wasn't expecting to see drastic improvement. The bulk of his progression as a QB will be made over the summer.

Jarrett Stidham and Deshaun Watson did. Injuries ended both their seasons though. Josh Rosen I'd say had a better true freshman season than Hurts especially given Hurts had one of the best supporting casts in history.

Hurts QBRs in the three postseason games were 31.6, 13.8, and 25.2. Those are horrible numbers. He'll have to improve significantly for the team to get as far as they did last year.

Absolute stud. However, outside of FSU his games where he played a lot were SC State, UNC, NC State, South Carolina. Nobody even close to what Jalen saw his last 4 games.

Jarrett Stidham

He started 3 games in an incredibly QB friendly system with a coach who has never had a QB perform poorly. Ever.

He also had 3 TD/2 INT and less than 60% completion against Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.

Josh Rosen

Maybe so, but it's debatable and he added nothing with his legs while Hurts is an elite runner.

My overall point was even the best, most coveted NFL QBs did not tear things up as freshmen. It's fair to question Hurts passing ability, but it's not fair to act like him being a freshman isn't a fair tag to any suboptimal play last year.

He has to improve. If he does, good, he'll be fine. If not, he'll probably lose his job. It's pretty simple IMHO.

There is no coach in his right mind that would start TT over Hurts. Their resumes are not even close. You can't compare a high school SR. with a QB who won 14 games last year. Barring an absolute total collapse or injury by Hurts, there is nothing and I repeat nothing humanly possibly that Tua or anyone else for that matter could do in the spring or fall camp that would be more impressive than what Hurts did last year. Now once the games start next year it might change, but it will not before then.

I don't think his deep ball was terrible last year.

Hurts' deep ball wasn't bad, it just disappeared towards the end of the season. We did very little to stretch the defense. Whether that was by design or by accident is another debate.

Yes our WRs couldn't find it as it was thrown nowhere near them.

Tua won't start over Hurts this year. However, I don't think Saban will be hesistant to put Tua in if Alabama has a comfortable lead. We could see him put Tua out there sometimes if Alabama is up 14, just to give him a feel for the speed of the game and to know what it's like to play when the game is still somewhat on the line.

Next year will be Tua's best shot to start. Hurts will also have to not progress.

Because it was rarely thrown at all.

Ask Kiffin. His playcalling was atrocious the last few games of the year.

I will say that I want to see Hurts (and our offense) get better at converting in the red zone. Big plays are great but you got to be able to punch it in....especially when you consider how fricking horrible our kicking is. (Why we didn't offer Carlson's brother a bag of unmarked bills is beyond me.)

We don't know if our kicking will be horrible or not. The guy pegged to kick this fall won't be on campus until the summer.

I doubt it, unless they think he's going to end up beating out Hurts. If they think Hurts is going to hold onto the job for the foreseeable future, they'll try to reshirt Tua this year.

Previous experience tells us that our expectations should be pretty low. If you just embrace the fact that it will be shitty, you'll be overjoyed with adequate play.
