Has anyone thought about how awful mullet nation will be post-Saban?

- The first time we have the #13 ranked recruiting class

- The first time we go 8-5 and lose to Iowa in the Outback Bowl

- The first time we actually lose to Tennessee again

Lord almighty have mercy on the Ray Perkins figure that takes over for CNS. Luckily for him he will get the Les Miles inheritance at LSU type treatment for the first 2-3 years, then he will have to stand on his own.

I think I'm just going to think of these scenarios every few days to reboot and remind myself how special all of this is.

I think Tom Herman will somehow survive.

I think it'll take a few years of terrible recruiting to start having a drop off. Saban is most likely not going to leave the cupboard bare. I could even see the new HC winning a NC in his first year.

I don't think we'll have that big of a drop off. Yes no one will be able to follow Saban, but I think that the AD will throw the bank and make a home run hire. It's hard to speculate who, since we don't know when Saban will
be retiring and the coaching landscape changes year after year, but I have no doubt that we will try to get the best guy out there.

Oh I agree. We'll hire a known quantity. But whoever it is won't be Saban, and there will inevitably be a "drop off" (even if that drop off is becoming FSU now and not Alabama now).

Haven't thought about it at all really. Why worry about that? Do you think it will be worse than Harvey, teabagge(wasn't he an alum?), drunk lady stage diving against OU, or the lesbian murder all during Saban?

On second thought

Given how people are completely fricking melting in the recruiting thread right now, I'd say it's gonna be ugly.

I might have to leave this place for a decade or two.

I DGAF ...Bama is bigger than any one coach....

Mullet Nation? Are those the people I see around campus just prior the Spring game?

No, because there is no guarantee we will be awful. We'll most likely hire another top notch coach and keep pluggin along.

Why are you such a negative Nancy lately? We are in the midst of the best CFB run of all time and you are worrying about what may or may not happen 5 or 10 years down the road?

Live in the moment, enjoy it.

Thought just popped into my head.

Trust me, I'm on cloud nine regarding our football program.

THIS. Sure, it will be an important hire, but as long as we're still in the hunt and win the SEC every 2-3 years most folks will be fine with it. And if the hire wins a NC, that should buy him a while as long as we don't have losing seasons (a la Chizik level melt).

Not many home run hires want to follow a legend. Bama will get a good coach, but the really big names will not want to follow Saban.

Maybe; maybe not. What isn't in doubt is that the next HC will walk into a mess the same way Saban did. Whether the next HC sustains the success will be in question, but the roster will still be filled with talent and the facilities will still be top notch.

Hope you're right but, in my lifetime, Bama's had 2 coaches that were home run hires, Bear and Saban. They've had one that was a very good hire, Stallings (and his resume was probably the weakest of any 'cept DuBose, but his best trait was that he didn't fear Bear's shadow). They've had 4 that I'd consider average hires, Perkins, Curry, Franchione, and Shula. And 2 bad hires, DuBose (as bad as that era was, he did win an SEC championship) and Price (not a bad coach but the way he went out was very embarrassing to the school). Not to mention that we missed out on a likely home run hire in Bobby Bowden (he openly acknowledged he wanted the job and we spurned him)...

Don't know when Saban will leave/retire, but I'm just gonna enjoy the ride while he's here. I used to think things were cyclical when it came to college football, particularly in the SEC...but Saban's changed my mind on that. Don't see this stretch being repeated for a very long time, if ever. Whomever has the privilege/curse of following Saban, I'll give him a fair shot as I won't expect anything close to what we've seen these past 8 years...but even if it gets bad, I'll still have great memories of this unprecedented run/dynasty...
