Which makes sense given the latest Cecil article. When Cecil writes a "time to change" article it generally means a guys days are numbered.

This is SHOCKING news. I really wish we'd give coach Grant a few more years to get his guys in place, and not be judged by all the bad luck he's had to face these first couple of years.

Unless we make the tournament, I just don't see how he can survive. People say he has a chance but I just don't see it. A major program like Alabama can't just continue to flounder like it has.

I've posted this before but to me, its really sad to see Grant fail. He's a class act and I think he's done everything he thinks he can do. Yes, he can go sleep knowing he'll have millions in the bank so its hard to really feel sorry for him. But looking back, so many people wanted him to succeed and for one reason or another, he just can't get us over the hump.

Agree 100%. Everyone is glowing about how good a person he is, I love the "idea" of what he wants to do : toughness, treat everyone the same, defense first, etc. It just hasn't worked. It sucks.

Not only that, EVERYONE in basketball said what a sure fire winner we'd be with him, and that he's a can't miss.

Sucks it didn't work. I really wanted it to with him.

Yep, same. Also, really makes me fear hiring any other coach from a mid-major like that. Grant was as "sure fire" a solid hire as they come - everyone in basketball thought so.

Grant's stubbornness is what cost him his job.

I believe his buyout is 1/2 this year what it was last year. He doesn't survive unless, as others said, we make the tourney in a miracle so big it would rival the US beating the Russians in hockey in the 1980 Olympics.

I am not a basketball fan but I too am sad that Grant couldn't make things work here.

Crazy to think when he was hired many people were worried he would only be here 3-4 years because he was so good that a big basketball program would hire him away.

He was the definition of a home run hire at the time.

Hope Bama fans remember that when we hire the next guy and don't write off a unsexy hire right away or anoint a guy the next Wimp until we see what he can do.

Hope he lands on his feet. He's done everything the right way - everything except win. And unfortunately, that's the only metric that matters in the end.

Who does Bama hire? Who would want to come coach at Bama? Should have fired Grant last year and hired Pearl. Bama will have to find a unknown coach that specializes in a fast paced offense.

I totally agree, and if he were white he would be given another year. Give him some time to get his system in and get his recruits in, give him some time.

The problem, to me, with a relatively unknown mid major coach is that the chance of getting someone a lot worse than Grant is pretty high. Particularly if they come from a 2-3 year stint at solid smaller programs that were pretty good even before they arrived.

If the AD does go that way, I hope it's not based on a great winning percentage the past couple of years but on a long track record of identifying 3* players of the type profile that our recruiting area offers and consistently turning them into contributors to NCAA caliber teams.

Otherwise, we can much more easily end up with Pelphrey or Barbee instead of Grant.

In a perfect world, I wish Grant would have simply pushed hiring a well paid assistant who's respected enough in developing big men to draw bigger recruits and also turn some athletic 6-9 3* guys into players.

But, it looks as though, as John Lennon would have it, that bird has flown.
