Discussing Bama recruiting with a buddy over beers the other day....talked how loaded we are with talent and how we have just been lights out recruiting since that transformative 2008 class.

That brought up a question: How many players from the Dubose-Shula era could make the cut at Bama today? There are some obvious ones:

Chris Samuels
Shaun Alexander
Prothro
Saleem Rasheed

Any others that could cut it on today's roster?

I am a bit embarrassed I missed these two guys - particulary Meco. Dude was incredible.

Would have liked to have seen what Brodie could have done behind the OLines like GMac and AJ had.

The knock on Alexander was he wasn't willing to block in pass protection, especially his freshman season in 96. Hardly anyone knew who he was when he wen for 250+ yards against LSU late in the season. He figured it out by his sophomore year. Zow was the one known for not being a great practice guy. Not that he was lazy, he just didn't look good in practice.

Alexander wasn't a Dubose recruit though. He was a Stallings recruit.

Brodie Croyle was so poorly protected during his time at UA and you could see flashes of brilliance when the line would give a at least 2 seconds. Had he played behind the O lines Saban built.... even the young ones, Brodie would have been one of the top 5 QBs in the nation.

Wasn't he on Saban's '07 squad? Also, Dukes got pretty good at reading the QB when the linebackers wouldn't bail him out in '06.

It's a difficult question to answer. Sure, lots of those guys named hypothetically might be able to play...but how big is our roster? 85 scholarships? A better question might be to build the best 85 man roster from the Saban era, then specifically name who might get cut and by whom.

For example, if you have 4 RBs on your roster and they're Ingram, Richardson, Yeldon, and Coffee...which one does Alexander bump off the roster?
