Cecil Hurt Q&A with Greg Byrne

Never say never might as well mean never.

Q: Have you had a chance to discuss future football schedules?
A: We have already had some discussions about that. The model that we have used for the past several years (seven home games, four SEC games and an early-season game at a neutral site) has worked very well. I have not heard a lot of momentum for a nine-game SEC schedule, so we are proceeding forward as if that (eight-game league schedule) will stay the same.
We have neutral games through 2019, and now is the time when you look at 2020 and beyond. I do understand the interest in home-and-home series. You never say never, but I would reiterate that the neutral games have been very good for us in a number of areas.
Never say never might as well mean never.

Can he do anything to get us out of that Duke game?...or maybe trade that football game with Duke for a basketball game?

Yeah that thing sucks.
I just wish we'd go to nine conference games. I'm 21 right now. If I live to 105, I'll only have the chance to see each East team other than UT in BDS 7 more times. That's ridiculous.
South Carolina hardly even feels like they're in our conference in football anymore it's been so long since we played.

Surely fans won't put up with this forever. Look at Georgia's home schedule this year:
App State
Samford
Miss State
Missouri
South Carolina
Kentucky
Why would anyone buy season tickets for that?

Why would it bother the fans? You're guaranteed a prime OOC game every year (Duke is a bit of an anomaly) and the athletic department makes FAR more playing these games than it does for a home and home. And honestly, I've enjoyed going to Dallas and Atlanta for the openers.

Because it doesn't come in your season ticket package.
The athletic department makes far more from TidePride and season tickets than on a neural site opener.

I know how quickly things can change, but I'm just happy to hear him looking forward to 2020 and beyond.

Said it before and I'll say it again...when it comes to scheduling, the athletic department couldn't care less for the ticket buying fan.

You clearly haven't been reading very many posts from fans about this topic. You're in the minority liking the neutral site games. Most of us have been sick of them for years. They suck because of the terrible NFL atmosphere.
I think the reason they're playing Duke is they have seen that the playoff committee doesn't care about strength of schedule, so long as you've got a big brand. It mattered in the BCS, doesn't matter anymore. One of the many reasons the current system is awful.

The suck because we will never have the opportunity to visit great traditional places like Notre Dame, Michigan, and others.

I'm sure the fact we are 7-0 in those games, all won by double digits is going to cause some schools to not want to sign up for them.

We should reach out to Jim Harbaugh. I think he would jump at the chance to play Saban to open the season. Bama and Michigan to open up in 2021 sounds good.

The neutral site games were great the first few years but they've run their course from the fans' perspective. Its another trip coupled with a traditional SEC schedule, SECCG, Semi-Final, and National Championship game. Fans only have so much money and motivation. Then people wonder why we didn't have tons of fans in Tampa. I bet the moment we finally lose one of these neutral site games the feeling towards them will change.
Its an absolute joke that we scheduled Duke for a neutral site game.

Maybe season openers, but you have to found the 2007 FSU game in this category.

My guess is that this is more of a Chick-fil-A Kick-off scheduling thing as opposed to a Bama scheduling thing...could be wrong, and it doesn't make it any more appealing, but I'm guessing Chick-fil-A is responsible for the ACC-SEC matchups...must've been Duke's turn...

Not true at all. The Tide Pride donation doesn't change. Plus, they are guaranteed about $13 million in profit (less travel) from two neutral site games. That's actual profit, not revenue.
They don't make nearly that much from the one home game you'd get in a home/home split.

My point wasn't comparing the single games to each other. My point was if people get fed up with never getting a good OOC game in their season ticket package and decide to stop buying it, the athletics department would lose money.
Our fans are probably too football obsessed to do that, but almost every season ticket holder I know complains about it. Particularly in even years when Auburn is the only exciting home game.

This will probably happen at some point when travel fatigue sets in. So far, the university hasn't had much trouble selling it's forced buy of tickets, but the tipping point will occur when they have to eat the cost of thousands of tickets.
It's all about the $.

Would have liked to see Duke give us a OOC basketball game in return for us giving them a football game and a nice payday for showing up.

they quit giving a damn about fans a long time ago ...
