Does anyone recognize the name Dewey Ware from one of our championship teams?

This old man came in earlier wearing an alabama national championship ring. I gave him the customary roll tide as he left and the guy that works for me knew him and told me his name. I have searched wikipedia and everywhere else I can think of and cant find his name on ANY of the national championship teams.

Now I am quite aware that there are a few championship rings out there that have been sold over the years, which makes me cringe, but as a collector, I would definitely love to have one for my alabama collection. However, I would never be so bold as to wear it other than maybe occasionally slipping it on while admiring it at home, but never in public. In my opinion, those are sacred pieces that only the man who earned it has the right to wear. They command a type of respect, and someone who paid money for it and not blood sweat and tears, is undeserving of said respect.

Not sure why this is bothering me so much but it really does. I am really hoping this guy was maybe a ball boy or a manager or something at the very least and not just a collector that has the audacity to wear this thing like a badge of honor that he never earned.

There are a lot of people not actually on the team that get a ring. I had a friend on the scout team in 92 and he got a ring. You won't find his name on any rosters anywhere.

The Bryant Museum keeps a list of Alabama Lettermen. You can search it, but I didn't see a Ware listed. But he could have been a walk-on, or an assistant coach, equipment manager, etc.

Also, here is a list in the Official Alabama Record Book. I couldn't find him in there either.

But, a pretty cool piece of history about Bama's Letterman. John F. Kennedy is listed as an honorary Alabama Letterman in the record book.

Oh wow! Thats interesting

Yeah, I kind of thought about the whole equipment manager/random guy that works in the athletic department angle too. It resembled one of the more recent rings, with the number 1 in the middle of a 'ruby-like' football shaped stone. This guy was probably around 70.

Who knows

I know they give one to people who are support staff and such but I would feel like a douche walking around with a ring on if I wasn't a player or major coach.

My dad and younger brother were down in the keys last week of 2015. They told me they ran into a guy wearing a 2012 championship ring. Said he bought it from the kicker... They did not know which kicker, as Florida fans they did not appreciate our kicking woes that year. I'm hoping Foster cause he doesn't deserve one

How old was the guy? The only Dewey I remember is Dewey Mitchell, who played in the late seventies.
