quote:

According to bylaw 14.5.6 in the NCAA transfer guide, Barnett as a 4-2-4 transfer (four-year institution, to a junior college, and back to a four-year institution), can be eligible one calendar year from the date of his transfer from Alabama so long as he graduates with a GPA above 2.5 over an average of 12 hours per term at the certifying institution of Barnett’s choosing.

We regularly see college coaches delay naming a starting quarterback in open competitions until the first game of the season. Sometimes the competition extends well into the season. That can be a tool used to limit the flexibility and motivation for a quarterback to transfer out.

Interesting and maybe why he left during the season.

The loophole is in his mechanics/release.

I don't see that as being a loophole that should concern anyone. If he left in August, he could have gone to JUCO, graduated, and been eligible next August. All that happened is the date got moved a month.

I assume all JUCOs have started their fall terms, so depending on his academic situation he might also be looking at having to go to summer term in JUCO to graduate - and unless I missed something he won't be playing football anywhere the rest of this fall.

I just don't see too many players thinking that sitting unnoticed and not playing at a JUCO for an entire season, possibly unable to join a FBS program until next August with the other incoming true freshmen, and then being ineligible until October as a viable path to a successful college career.

He did, and he may have opened the floodgates of this happening much more often. Think about the proliferation of graduate transfers following the lead of Russell Wilson.

I just wish Kamara would've done this instead of staying through the season and allegedly torpedoing recruiting efforts

I would guess they will eventually change the rule though.
